Social partners in new and candidate EU countries need political will, trust and confidence to advance social dialogue

On the 12th February in Brussels, more than 50 people took part in the final conference of a joint UNI Europa and Eurocommerce project aimed at improving capacity building in Central and Eastern Europe as well as in EU candidate countries.

The meeting concluded a one-year project made of 4 regional workshops in respectively, Warsaw, Prague, Brussels and Istanbul where employers and trade union representatives from the countries concerned discussed social dialogue and industrial relations, challenges, obstacles and possible areas of cooperation.

Profits double but Lloyds’ staff rewarded with insulting pay deal

Underlying profits for the Lloyds Banking Group doubled to £6.2 billion in 2013 yet workers in branches, call centres and back offices struggling to turn the bank around have been given an insulting pay deal of just two per cent.
 
Unite national officer Rob Macgregor said: "Lloyds has slashed over 35,000 jobs since 2008 bringing misery for staff.

Barclays boosts bonuses while slashing staff

Unite, Britain’s biggest union, has accused Barclays of going back to its ‘old ways’ with a bonus pool of £2.4 billion while announcing plans to slash thousands of jobs.
 
7000 job losses in the UK businesses raises questions about how Barclays will maintain customer service standards. The cuts will heap further pressure on those who ‘survive’ to meet the increased demands on them for improved customer service.

PostNL's deal with SEOshop to boost e-commerce

PostNL’s website now offers the option to start and manage a webshop at SEOshop.

PostNL will provide its logistics to the growing European online-shop provider SEOshop. This collaboration with simplify the creation and use of a webshop for shopowners, especially the small and medium entreprises (SMEs) who often hesitate in the face of the complexity of setting up and running an online shop.

This new service will enable shopowners to manage all operations, such as orders, payments as well as the shipping of goods, from a single gateway.

EU Parliament adopts challenging report to the Troika operations

UNI Europa welcomes the EU Parliament’s Employment and Social Affairs Committee adopted Report on the employment and social consequences of the Troika operations in Cyprus, Greece, Ireland, and Portugal.

The Report emphasises the dire consequences of the Troika’s operations in terms of social cohesion in the programme countries and in terms of social protection of vulnerable groups.

Posting of workers: EU Trade Union Federations keep up the pressure

Trilogue negotiations on the Enforcement of the Posting of Workers Directive are ongoing.

The directive could provide an answer to abusive and fraudulent cross-border posting of workers.

The discussions however have accelerated in pace and could result in a rushed deal in order to obtain an agreement before the upcoming EU elections.

Global Call Center Conference rings changes in Florida

Hundreds of call center and finance unionists from across the world hoped to ring the changes in their sectors as the Global Call Center Conference got underway in Orlando, Florida.

Florida Congressman Alan Grayson and fired T-Mobile worker Joshua Coleman are among the special guests this week at the Double Tree Hotel. UNI Deputy General Secretary Christy Hoffman and CWA President Larry Cohen opened proceedings.
