Colombian union files lawsuit against Spanish security giant Prosegur

A Colombian trade union today filed a complaint with government authorities alleging that Spanish security giant Prosegur AB has engaged in gross violations of law concerning workers’ rights.

SINTRAVALORES, a union of security guards representing workers at Prosegur AB, filed a complaint with the Attorney General’s Office in Bogota based on Prosegur’s March 1, 2014 “pacto colectivo,” alleging it violates Article 200 of the Colombian Penal Code.

RBS in state sponsored grab

Unite, Britain’s biggest union, has accused RBS and the government of an ‘astonishing betrayal’ as the bank awards over half a billion in bonuses but reports one of the largest losses in UK corporate history.
 
RBS revealed annual losses of £8.2 billion and a £576 million bonus pot including £237 million to be shared among its investment bankers.
 
 Unite national officer, Rob MacGregor: “This is a state sponsored grab by greedy senior bankers. Taxpayers suffering a cost of living crisis have been betrayed and fleeced by the Tory-led government.

UNI MENA meets Libyan UGTL in Tunis - strengthening the ties

A meeting between UGTL (General Union of Libyan Workers / or Union Générale des Travailleurs Libyens) and UNI MENA representatives took place on Thursday February 27  2014 at the UNI MENA offices in Tunis.

The Banking (28000 members), Post and Telecom (13000) as well as Graphical (6000) sectors are well represented in UGTL, as well as some subcontracted aiport workers. There are also women and youth comittees. From the talks given by UGTL, it seems that the unions are entering a phase with more stability and that restructuring is going on in the sectors.

UNI Europa Winter School learns about the EU Parliament and Commission

Over 30 participants from all over Europe took part in the recent Winter school that took place in our offices in Brussels.

The participants had a unique opportunity to learn more about the EU machinery and more about lobbying done in the European Parliament.

The group visited the European Parliament and the Commission buildings to see exactly how the EU is working and listened to a debate on the banning of plastic shopping bags which was being discussed at the ECOSOC Commission building.

Philip Emphasizes Importance of Finance Unions’ Role for Responsible Finance Industry

Philip Jennings, General Secretary of UNI global union, made a speech to Japanese financial affiliates on 4 February, the day before attending UNI-LCJapan Annual General Meeting. 15 members including Bro. Masakazu Tahara, President of UNI Apro / UNI-LCJ Finance joined the meeting.  UNI-LCJ Finance is composed of 5 affiliates, whose fields vary from trust bank, labor bank, insurance cooperative to insurance company.

JPGU rank-and-file exchange with Indonesia

The new JPGU policy now gives English-speaking rank-and-file workers more opportunities to interact with other unions, facilitating more direct and candid exchanges between unions.

One of the workers benefiting from this new policy is Koharu Yamanaka, a JPGU rank-and-file worker from the Kochi prefecture, who was given an opportunity to attend two seminars by ASPEK and SPPI, and meet up with the DHL union in Indonesia from 20-24 February 2014. The UNI Apro Post & Logistics Director Eiichi Ito was also present to assist in communications when needed.
