UNICREDIT TRADE UNION ALLIANCE PUSHING FOR GLOBAL FRAMEWORK AGREEMENT

Thirteen union affiliates of UNI Finance met in Turin on February 25th 2014 to develop the strategy and action plan for the UniCredit Trade Union Alliance, to improve the rights and working conditions of the UniCredit employees. The event was covered by key media channels (TV, press) in Italy.

The Trade Union Alliance is strengthening the cooperation between unions both at the European and global levels by sharing information and implementing collective actions with the support and coordination of UNI Finance.

15,000 jobs could go in massive layoffs at IBM

IBM employees fear the worst after rumours spread that a massive round of layoffs could hit as many as 15,000 jobs worldwide on Thursday.

The IBM union Alliance@IBM says it has seen internal IBM communications and expects at least 10,000 workers to face the chopping block. “According to internal memos, IBM managers are said to have put the finishing touches last Saturday on lists of employees to be laid off,” the union said. Employees in IBM’s struggling hardware business are thought to be particularly vulnerable to the cuts.

Unite says HSBC pension savings a ‘drop in the ocean’ next to profits

Unite, the union representing staff at HSBC, says the millions being saved by the bank’s plans to slash pensions for 10,000 staff is a drop in the ocean compared to pre-tax profits of £13.6 billion. 

HSBC has also cut its global full-time staff equivalent numbers by 41,000 to 254,000 over the past three years. 

The bank revealed that 239 of its staff had been paid  £1 million or more in 2013 and its CEO Stuart Gulliver was awarded a total pay package of £8 million for 2013, up from £7.5 million the previous year.

Workers' Protest Actions at Mayr-Melnhof Graphia Izmir

Turkish Basin-Is members in Mayr Melnhof Graphia Izmir are starting protest actions today for the respect of their collective rights and to fight all kinds of pressure, agressive behaviour and malicious intent from the HR Management to postpone the collective agreement procedures. They have been wating for a collective agreement since November 2012 - 166 workers out of 250 are members of the union. They claim that they have been deceived until now and have sent a letter addressed to Mr. Hörmanseder, CEO of the company, highlighting their demands:

Colombia: The birth of a union in Papeles Familia Sancela (SCA)

On February 22nd, 2014, a group of workers from Papeles Familia Sancela, a company owned by the Swedish multinational SCA, decided to form a union as a tool for defending their labour and social rights, and thereby exercising the constitutional right to freedom of association.

This process has been accompanied by the National Union of Paper, Pulp and Cardboard Workers SINTRAPULCAR, UNI Global Union, and Industriall.

Industriall and Swedish SCA signed a Global Agreement through which the company undertakes to respect freedom of association and collective bargaining.

The Changing Face of Canadian Credit Unions

A series of changes are impacting customers and the COPE 378 members who work in credit unions across British Columbia, Canada.

Coastal Community Credit Union (CCCU) saw some of the most significant technological changes so far, with the introduction of a banking call centre and “Interactive Teller Machines” or ITMs. Credit union members can now talk with a real person (also a COPE 378 member) working out of a central location, even outside of regular branch hours.

Solidarnosc protests in front of Lidl stores about difficult working conditions in Poland

On 21st February, in front of Lidl shops in the whole Poland, Solidarity Union members organized a piquet and distributed leaflets to customers informing them about the difficult working conditions and violation of workers and unionist rights of people employed in Lidl. Unionists demanded that Union leaders from Lidl that were sacked in December are reinstated in their job.
