Trade unions firmly oppose deregulatory measures that endanger workers and challenge acquired worker’s rights. The European trade union movement launched a joint campaign against the REFIT programme.
The workshop was held on January 30th and 31st, in the city of Bogota. Participants included representatives from 7 finance sector unions: Uneb, Aceb, Anebre, Sindefonahorro, Sintrabancol, Fenasibancol, Ases and from the National Union School (ENS in Spanish).
Two very productive days including a speech from Eduardo Sarmiento, Engineer and Economist, who gave a global perspective on the country’s situation and what it is going through. The topics discussed went in depth on key issues affecting the sector and the change in the Colombian legislation.

On the 20th Anniversary of the signing of NAFTA, labor unions, farmers, women, environmentalists, and human rights organizations from México, the United States, Canada and Quebec came together in a Tri-national Forum in Mexico City. We have assessed the impact on human, environmental, labor, social, and cultural rights. We conclude that the benefits of NAFTA were exaggerated to sell the agreement to the public.
Trade unions and NGOs are rallying outside Cambodian Embassies around the world today demanding the release of Cambodian garment workers detained since the beginning of January. The campaign is set to escalate if they are not freed at tomorrow’s court hearing.
Prosegur, the giant Spanish Security Company, has won a contract worth 2 million Euros - just after announcing dismissals across the whole of Spain. The new contract, with the Spanish Ministry of Foreign Affairs, is for surveillance services. The contract deal was announced only two days after the dismissals wre announced due to cuts and loss of contracts. Despite this announcement the company has claimed it will be proceeding with the dismissals.
Cleaners at Frankfurt University Hospital protest against the low levels of hygiene caused by cut backs. The cost cutting `race to the bottom`has led to a decline in standards and in infection control. The Cleaners are protesting about this threat to themselves and to patients. The Cleaners union IG BAU are campaigning across Germany to raise awareness of this with members of the public and to raise standars in training, equipment and protection for the workforce
Unite, the UNI Finance affiliate and the union representing staff at The Bank of England, has called on the bank to lead by example and not cut its workforce. The announcement that up to 100 jobs are to be cut will come as a shock to the loyal employees across London.
The job losses today will be across the central services divisions such as security, IT and human resources, and will cause much concern.
