Joining the global organising campaign in Smurfit Kappa Group, workers in Smurfit Kappa Poland, Pruszkow site, have formed a branch of ZZP Union, which is affiliated to UNI.

Smurfit Kappa in Pruszkow is one of 5 sites the company has set up in Poland, with total employment of about 800 people.

The ZZP Union has been involved in the international union network since the 1990 and forming of the union in Smurfit Kappa was also widely supported by other graphical unions affiliated to UNI.

Life is a ride – for women it’s 23% harder

Women as much as men are entitled to equal pay. Women represent 50% of the total labour force. Women make up 60% of all new university graduates.

But
- They are more likely to work in vulnerable employment (60%) or in part-time employment (50%).
- Only 17% of them hold managerial and senior positions in Europe
- When employed in the same jobs as men, they are paid 23% less globally

Bangladeshi unions protest for maternity leave equality on International Womens’ Day

Bangladeshi garment workers’ unions used International Women’s day to campaign for the right to six months of maternity leave for all women working in the private sector.

Whilst government workers are already entitled to six months paid maternity leave by Bangladeshi law, private sector workers, including millions of female garment workers, are only given four months. The National Garment Workers Federation formed a human chain of female workers in front of the National Press Club in the capital Dhaka to protest against the discrimination.

UFCW leaders arrested at demonstration for New York car wash workers

Top union leaders from one of UNI’s largest affiliates, America’s UFCW, were arrested as part of a demonstration in support of car wash workers in New York City this week.

Those arrested included UFCW President Marc Perrone and Executive Vice President Stuart Appelbaum. The union leaders had taken to the streets to support workers at Vegas Auto Spa in Brooklyn who have been on strike since November after they sued the car wash owner for hundreds of thousands of dollars in unpaid wages and damages.

European Sunday Alliance launches broadly supported interest group on work-life balance

On 3 March, the European Day for a Work Free Sunday, at the EU Parliament, and at the presence of MEPs from the main political groups, the European Sunday Alliance launched the first European Interest Group on WORK-LIFE BALANCE. The group supported by representatives of politicians, trade unions, employers, family and sports organizations and representatives of families and religious NGOs brought together, for the first time, 50 people to discuss how to ensure that EU legislation respects and promote workers' health and promote a better balance between family and private life and work.
