Early childhood care in Europe: working conditions, training and quality of services

A new report into the working conditions, training, and quality of services in the Early Childhood Education and Care sector in Europe has been released by research organisation Eurofound.

This report reviews research evidence from all 28 EU Member States to identify how the training and development of ECEC workers can be tailored to improve the quality of the services available for children below primary-school age in EU Member States.

Nordea employees in alliance with new Polish colleagues

Employees in Nordea's Polish subsidiary are turning away from the old 'Solidarność' (Solidarity) to form a new trade union in Poland, headed by Patryk Bak and Wojciech Stachura (photo). The four Nordic financial unions in Nordea now collaborate with the Polish colleagues who today hold the jobs outsourced to Poland by the Nordea Group. "This is a rare success story," says labour-market researcher Nana Wesley Hansen.

Barclays profits rose to £5.5bn: the employees deserve their fair share

Barclays announced today that its profits rose 12% to £5.5bn in 2014.

The CEO Antony Jenkins was awarded a £1.1m bonus - his first as chief executive - pushing his total pay package to £5.5m for 2014.

New Zealand Care Workers Win!

Thanks to care workers who are members of the Service and Food Workers' Union, over 35,000 home care relief workers have gained the right to the minimum wage and holidays through a case won by workers in the Employment Court.

The court yesterday agreed to the union arguments that the Ministry of Health and Capital and Coast District Health Board had breached the law in paying home care relief worker Jan Lowe a "subsidy" of as little as $3.00 an hour rather than the $14.25 an hour minimum wage and minimum holiday entitlements.
