Brazil: Prosegur made illegal deductions from salaries over five-year period

In the Brazilian state of Rio Grande do Norte, Prosegur made illegal deductions from employees’ salaries during a five-year period to pay for a compulsory life insurance scheme.

In Brazil, all private security workers are required to have life insurance in accordance with local legislation. The cost of life insurance is entirely the responsibility of employers.

The former employment award in the state was not in accordance with federal law and stated that workers would meet the cost of the life insurance.

UNI Europa Finance Call for Tender

National strike of private security workers in Portugal to defend collective agreement

In defense of their collective agreement, the Portuguese workers of private security have called for a nationwide strike on 26 and 27 March and are also demonstrating today. The Union of Workers of Concierge Services, Surveillance, Cleaning, Household and Various Interests (STAD) have complained that after three direct negotiations with employers, there continues to be no agreement on the revision of the current collective agreement.

Madrid home help workers to go on indefinite strike to defend Collective Agreement

The sector of home help in Madrid will go on indefinite strike to defend its Collective Agreement. Home help workers in Madrid have decided to call an indefinite strike from April 6, upon being notified of the employer's proposed wage freeze and reduction of rights. The sector of home care in the Community of Madrid has 10,000 workers who provide care services in homes of about 50,000 people.

A ‘new start for social dialogue’?

On 5 March, I took part in a European Commission high level conference that was highlighted as a ‘new start for social dialogue’. Such a relaunch is more than welcome from UNI Europa’s side – social dialogue is after all a constituent principle of the EU treaty and designed to bring the social partners (employers and employees) together to developing Europe’s social agenda following their interests but also with joint decisions.

Unite develops apprenticeships to secure paper and print industry

Britain’s biggest union, Unite, has joined forces with employers to create a new industry standard apprenticeship for paper and print.
 
The development, which comes during National Apprenticeship Week, is being viewed as a significant boost to training, skills and long-term job security.
 
Unite is working with industry leaders, such as Arjo Wiggins and De La Rue, across the paper and print industries with the aim of developing rigorous training standards and relevant qualifications for apprentices.

Time for Justice: Give Mary Job Security

Proud United Voice member Mary Moles has worked at the Hobart Magistrates Court for 21 years as a Security Officer, and has been told that as of next week her employment cannot be secured.

During her employment and over the life of multiple tenders, Mary has always been a permanent, full-time worker. As of today, Friday 20th of March, Wilson Security takes over the tender for the Hobart and Launceston Courts.

Wilson has refused to keep Mary and her coworkers on permanent full time and have only offered a casual position. When they asked why, there was no answer.

Walmart ordered to pay 1 million Brazilian Reais for collective moral damages

The Public Ministry of Labour of Rio Grande do Sul obtained an increase of the fine imposed in August 2014 for the irregular hiring of temporary workers. The sanction also states that Walmart must regularize these workers’ situation, display the court order in all the chain’s supermarkets for public view for at least six months, and publish it during 3 consecutive Sundays in the State’s most widespread newspaper.

Brazil: Authorities seek a US$5 million fine against Prosegur

Brazilian Prosecutor: "State companies contracting Prosegur are also victims"

The Attorney General’s Office in Brazil is seeking a fine of US$5 million against Prosegur for  1,768 labour violations in the state of Rio Grande do Norte. The irregularities center on excessive working hours in the state that do not comply with Brazilian law. Authorities have ordered Prosegur to adjust their shifts patterns into line with legal requirements, and a issued a suspended fine of US$ 6,600 per day if the judicial order is not complied with.
