In a January 18 press release, the Secretary General of the Pan African Postal Union (PAPU), Mr. Younouss Djibrine highlighted key development priorities for the postal sector in Africa up to the year 2016, top among them being electrification of post offices and internet connectivity.

Twenty years ago you were the first trade union leader to come to Davos. How did that
come about?

Live performance and audiovisual sectors come together to discuss work-life balance

Union representatives from around Europe met in Brussels on 20-21 January to discuss the issue of work-life balance. UNI MEI, together with FIM, FIA and EFJ, organised the seminar in the framework of a European project on work-life balance in the audiovisual and live performance sectors. The seminar was the final event of the project which focused on examining the situation in eight European countries, these being France, Germany, Poland, Romania, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden and the UK. The seminar raised interest more widely, and several other countries took part as well.

New York Times: Jennings giving labour a voice at Davos

UNI Global Union General Secretary, Philip Jennings,  in the New York Times today says world leaders from Barack Obama to the Pope are waking up to the reality that inequality and jobs are the number one issue in the recovery and business must change its behaviour.

"We need to revisit some of the old struggles," he said, "We need to rediscover collective bargaining".

European Sunday Alliance calls on MEPs to promote a Work-free Sunday and Decent Work in EU legislation

On 21 January 2014, on the occasion of a Conference at the European Parliament which gathered 120 participants, the European Sunday Alliance officially launched a Pledge for a work-free Sunday and decent work, ahead of the European elections 2014. The Pledge is aimed at committing European politicians to the promotion of a common weekly day of rest as well as a legal framework guaranteeing sustainable working time patterns based on the principle of decent work.

U.S. government charges Walmart with labour violations

The National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) in the United States has issued the largest-ever complaint against Walmart for breaking federal labour law by violating workers’ rights. The complaint filed by the federal government agency alleges Walmart illegally fired and disciplined nearly 70 workers, including those who went on strike last June to speak out for better jobs.
