New agreement for the METRO EUROFORUM signed

A new agreement for the METRO EUROFORUM was signed last week, 3rd of April in Dusseldorf (Germany), where the group is headquartered, on the occasion of the its Annual Plenary meeting.

The new agreement reinforces rights for transnational information and consultation for 26 workers’ representatives from the METRO group in 16 countries in the Europe, including a new member from Croatia, the country that joined the EU on the 1st of July 2014.

NUNW Malaysia wins recognition at Utusan Media Sales

NUNW Malaysia has successfully organized Utusan Media Sales, a subsidiary company of Utusan Malaysia Group, on 3rd April 2014 where a secret ballot resulted in 83.3 % voting in favour of the union. NUNW has used the techniques learnt from the "Organizing Training for Graphical Sector" held on 19-21 Nov 2013 and the "Youth Breaking Through Seminar" held on 27 Nov-1st Dec 2013 in Kuala Lumpur. Andy Snoddy, Head of UNI Global Graphical & Packaging, congratulated the Malaysian Newspaper Workers Union and its General Secretary, Soosai Raj Savarmuthu, on their latest organising success.

Mexico City Cleaners Fight for a Better Life

Angela Olvera Coba, a cleaner in downtown Mexico City, tells her story about life as a cleaner in one of Mexico City’s downtown buildings.  Angela described her situation which is similar to that of many other cleaners—long hours of work (in addition to a commute that is often 2 hours at the beginning and the again at the end of the workday).  A lack of protective gloves or safety information about chemicals used in cleaning.  The low pay that she and others receive—often below the minimum standards required under Mexican law.  She also spoke about the failure of employers to pay the requir

Victory for Metro Cash and Carry Workers in Pakistan

Workers at Metro Cash and Carry stores in Pakistan recently won recognition of their union and reemployment of several dismissed union leaders thanks to an agreement worked out with UNI Global Union, Metro Group and Metro Pakistan management.

In January of 2014 Metro Group and UNI Global Union signed a Joint Statement reinforcing the principles of fair work, labor rights and collective bargaining that both organizations believe in. The statement also created a process for both parties to resolve disputes around labor rights issues.

UNI Apro Women - Women's Forum in Singapore

On April 4th, 2014, women from the UNI Apro region met in Singapore at a Women's Forum to discuss the recommendations to be made tomorrow (April 5th) at the 15th Meeting of the UNI Apro Women's Committee.

The participants discussed and followed up on the activities that have taken place since the last meeting in Manila 2011.

One of the key items on the agenda was the discussion on how to organize, integrate and empower more young women in the unions. Both Japan and India provided interesting insights into their experiences and case studies.

FICA calls on ICC Board to direct N. Srinivasan to step aside from ICC functions

The Federation of International Cricketers’ Associations (FICA) today called on the International Cricket Council (ICC) Board to direct N. Srinivasan to stand aside from all ICC functions. FICA Executive Chairman Paul Marsh today said it was imperative that the ICC Board acted strongly in response to the situation involving Mr Srinivasan.
