Back to business as usual at Barclays, HSBC, RBS, Lloyds Banking Group

The big four UK banks with RBS, HSBC, Lloyds Banking Group and Barclays all announcing their results for 2013.

The banks’ performances were mixed from HSBC making a staggering £13.6 billion in pre-tax profits to RBS reporting historic losses of £8.2 billion.

But regardless of whether the banks were raking it in or not, one thing  they all have in common is that they are back to showering their senior executives with huge sums of money regardless of performance.

£2.5bn Co-op Group losses should ‘sharpen’ minds of the need for reform, says Unite

Co-op Group results should ‘sharpen’ minds and leave people in ‘no doubt’ of the need for reform to save jobs and secure the group’s future, warned Britain’s largest union, Unite.

Earlier in the week, the union wrote to Co-op’s regional board members on behalf of its 1,200 members urging them to back Lord Myners’ reforms.

Millions of workers around the world live in poverty. Many of them are Cleaners and Security Guards. Working on low wages, in more than one job or on 12 hour shifts often 7 days a week, these workers struggle to survive and to feed their families. In Africa they often work for hours on end with no shelter from the sun and walk for 2 hours to work and then back. In India they work without any toilet or rest facilities. In Europe or the US they are often migrant workers, exploited and abused and too frightened to complain.

Turkish union secures DHL bargaining deal

The ITF (International Transport Workers¨Federation) and UNI Global Union today congratulated Turkeyħ TUMTIS union, which has secured a nationwide collective bargaining agreement (CBA) with logistics giant DHL. The agreement will provide 2,200 workers at DHL Turkey with social security, regulate DHLħ use of subcontracting, and make 750 subcontracted employees into permanent workers.

The agreement now covers 1600 factories employing 2 million workers.

French UNICARE affiliates protest to protect social insurance

On March 18, French UNICARE affiliates took strike action and protested alongside social welfare organizations, retirees, and members of the public, to defend the French social protection system. Protesters and strikers strongly opposed the austerity measures which are currently threatening jobs in the social protection sector, and which threaten the well-being of the French public.

Scholarship for Postal workers’ children sponsored by JPGU

JPGU Kanto Region has long granted scholarships to excellent students whose parents are members of UNI Postal affiliates in Sri Lanka (UPTO and NPTWU) to give them opportunities to continue higher education. Some 12 students are selected through examination and interview every two years. UNI Sri Lanka Liaison Council (UNI SLAC) Youth and Women Committee members are actively involved in the process from the selection to the Scholarship presenting ceremony.

UNI IKEA Global Union Alliance reaffirms commitment to good labour relations with IKEA everywhere

At the meeting in Copenhagen on 15 and 16 April 2014, 50 IKEA shop stewards and union delegates from 15 countries in Europe, Asia and North America came together to discuss the achievements of the Alliance over the past year and to agree a new action plan.

Turkish Union Guvenlik-Is spectacular growth results

UNI affiliate Guvenlik-Is has produced some spectacular growth results in the very early days of its union organising. Since November 2013 it has grown from 800 members to over7,000! It has already achieved the 1% national density in the sector that is necessary under Turkish law to allow the union to collect fees and campaign for recognition. General Secretary Bolat Ankarali announced at the start of a UNI organised 3 day training course that the union had now recruited 6,200 new members.
