Football players at Northwestern University are employees

The Chicago regional office of the National Labor Relations Board has ruled that the football players at Northwestern University are employees of the university. In applying the common law definition of employee to the situation of the players, regional director Peter Sung Ohr, ruled that based on the significant revenue ($235 million over 9 years) and benefit (positive image) that result from the efforts of the players and the rigorous control exercised by the coaches that the relationship was that of an employer to employee rather than university to student.

International demonstration against Prosegur abuses of its Colombian employees

• More than 100 workers and trade unionists from the private security and cleaning sectors in the United States, Brazil, Argentina, Chile, Uruguay, Peru, Paraguay, Costa Rica and Colombia will protest today in front of Prosegur’s Colombian headquarters in Bogotá.

• The Spanish company, and is Colombian management, are accused of not respecting the rights of its Colombian employees and committing criminal offenses.

Demonstration against Tamedia in Lausanne

Over a hundred employees of Tamedia gathered on March 13 before the tower of Edipresse in Lausanne, Switzerland. Given the very good results of the company in 2013, the employees of Tamedia are asking management to minimize layoffs and to negotiate a real social plan with the unions. The employees symbolically showed their displeasure by boycotting the 2013 accounts presentation by the management. Other actions may follow.

A new milestone in Brazil: UNI signs global framework agreement with Banco Itaú

UNI Global Union and its affiliates from the Americas have signed an historic global agreement with the largest private bank in Brazil, Banco Itaú.  Banco Itaú is a powerhouse in the Brazilian and Americas financial market and employees over 80,000 staff. UNI now has 51 global framework agreements with multinationals and leading companies around the world.

New Report: Cuts have left 250,000 older people without state care in England

A new report by the Nuffield Trust and Health Foundation thinktanks looks into the reductions in adult social services for the elderly in England shows that budget allocations from central Government to English local authorities were reduced by 14% in real terms between 2011/12 and 2014/15. The report asks how local authorities have responded to this decline in income and explores the impact on older adults’ health and wellbeing.

Chinese trade union challenges Walmart closure programme

Closures of Walmart stores in China have been challenged by the local unit of the ACFTU (All China Federation of Trade Unions, supported by the Chinese government) in Changde, Hunan province. The union has been leading protests outside a Walmart store that closed last week. As it is highly unusual for the government sanctioned union to lend its support to industrial actions, their backing has given workers great confidence.

“We’re taking back Our Future!”

On a cold and wet Friday afternoon in March, young trade unionists from across Europe took to the streets in Athens, Greece, to demonstrate their commitment to the young, precarious and unemployed. UNI Europa Youth’s action marked the launch of the new European Trade Union Federations’ joint youth campaign, “Enough of their crisis, back to our future!” which demands that EU institutions and employers finally make good on their promises to make youth issues a priority.

HomePlus Korea: Opening of Union Office

The HomePlus Union in Korea, supported by a UNI SCORE Organising Fund project, has just opened its office which the union has negotiated as part of its first collective contract with Tesco HomePLus. The UNI Organising Fund is supporting the work of two organisers who are now working to organise union members in the more than 100 Tesco HomePlus stores in Korea. Bro.
