Sindiquimica in Brazil stops work in solidarity with USA Huhtamaki workers

Sindiquimica, Bahia, affiliated to the CNQ in Brazil, stopped work at Huhtamaki for 3 hours on August 21 in solidarity with workers in the USA.

In Brazil, the union and all Huhtamaki workers did not enter the factory during 3 hours, in a show of solidarity with USA Huhtamaki workers.

Big step at MMG Izmir in Turkey: CBA signed after 2 years campaign

Following a long organising and collective agreement campaign (around 2 years) at Mayr Melnhof Graphia in Izmir, Turkey, Basin-Is signed a collective agrement for more than 200 Basin-Is members.

According to the collective agreement, members will benefit from new social benefits like social premium, paid leave, social payments and wage increase, wage balancing, better working conditions, participation at decision making processes, etc.

IKEA workers around the world are uniting to demand that IKEA in the U.S. offer full time jobs to every worker who wants one and to raise pay across the board, rather than just for new workers.

Many IKEA workers work almost full time, but have to make ends meet on less than 25 hours per week on low pay. When workers spoke out about the need for higher pay, IKEA responded by raising starting pay to match the living wage.

Nagasaki Peace Messengers call for world free of nuclear weapons

Today, The Nagasaki Peace Messengers visited UNI Global Union for the 10th year in a row. Their visit came before going to the United Nations in Geneva to present a petition of more than 130,000 signatures collected in the last year demanding nuclear disarmament. 

Masaki Koyanagi, from Nagasaki, will make a historic first-ever peace messenger speech to the UN plenary on nuclear disarmament. Earlier this year Koyanagi also attended and spoke at the “Conference on the Humanitarian Impact of Nuclear Weapons” in Mexico.

Canada - UFCW Canada files Gender Discrimination Complaint in B.C

Vancouver – August 13, 2014 – UFCW Canada filed a human rights complaint before the British Columbia Human Rights Tribunal today, denouncing B.C. employers who use discriminatory mechanisms that allow them to avoid hiring women under the Seasonal Agricultural Workers Program (SAWP).

Through a number of human rights complaints filed in Mexico and Canada, UFCW Canada is pressing for changes to the selection, hiring, and placement of Mexican migrant workers under the SAWP.
