Royal Mail Sale Undervalued £1Billion

Taxpayers in the United Kingdom "missed out on significant value" on the privatisation of Royal Mail, a new report from the Business, Innovation and Skills committee has found. The committee found that the Vince Cable, the business secretary, rushed the sale through and that British taxpayers lost out on an "adequate and appropriate return."   The BIS report follows an investigation by the UK National Audit Office earlier this year that also pointed to Government incompetence leading up to the sale of the British postal system in October 2013.

On 10 July 2014, ahead of the next round of US-EU trade negotiations, the American Federation of Labor and Congress of Industrial Organizations (AFL-CIO) and the European Trade Union Confederation (ETUC) issued a Declaration of Joint Principles on the Trans-Atlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP), calling for a trade agreement that prioritises “shared prosperity and sustainable social and economic development”.

Hundreds of thousands turnout for UK public sector protests

Up to a million public sector workers in the United Kingdom turned out for a day of action over pay freezes, falling living standards and pensions.

The industrial action – Britain’s largest for three years – has seen teachers, firefighters, care workers, refuse collectors, librarians and other civil servants man the picket lines across the country.

Belgium: UNI TAW Supports Unions Demanding Equal Treatment for Manpower Workers

Our Belgian affiliates have informed us that Manpower lost the contract with Sony Online Store resulting in 70 workers loosing their jobs. Some people decided to leave, some were offered other contracts but 42 people were left with nothing. belgian unions have started negotiations with Manpower trying to agree on the social plan but after the first meeting the company decided to fire 8 people and told the remaining colleagues would be dismissed without any social plan.

UNI Mourns Loss of John Baldwin, CWU-UK

It is with great sadness that we inform you that John Baldwin, Head of International Affairs of the Communication Workers Union (UK) and a long-time supporter of UNI’s work, died in his sleep Monday 7 July after a brief period of illness. He was aged 63.

 John joined the then UCW as a postman in 1976. He rose to be secretary of his local branch by 1980 and was appointed Senior Clerk in the Organising Department at UCW headquarters in 1986. From there, John worked in several departments of the UCW and the CWU before being named the CWU’s first International Officer in 2002.

Huhtamaki: unfair labor practices charges lodged

As workers from Huhtamaki plants around the world, from New Zealand to Germany, continue to demonstrate their support for their colleagues in California, the U.S. Steelworkers have lodged a charge against the company.

The charge under the National Labor Act is that the company is engaging in unfair labor practices by changing their policy to ban solicitation.
