UNITE members from Smurfit Kappa Northampton Plant walked out at Midnight on Wednesday 1st April and commenced a 48 hour stoppage which ran in conjunction with the month long work to rule and overtime ban which finishes on the 24th April

UNITE members are resilient and steadfast in getting their two dismissed representatives back to work and have decided to escalate the action to a four day stoppage commencing on Friday 17th April

After two strikes, the Italians affiliates signed the new National Collective Agreement

The new agreement, that expires at the end 2018, maintains the national negotiation and had included social aspects of labor relations. An important achievement in this area was the incentives to contract young workers, including a common fund that incorporated contributions from top manager salaries.

 The unions and the ABI – the Italian Bank Federation agreed to discuss the work life balance, through thematic meetings that will start 30 days after the signature of the agreement.

CHILE – President Bachelet signs a law which substantially improves the lives of retail workers

President Bachelet signs into law an agreement that grants 7 additional free Sundays a year to retail workers. The law comes into effect as of 1 April 2015.

The legislation also covers part-time workers who work at least four days a week.

The normal hourly rate is increased by 30% for all Sunday work. Part-time workers, even if they only work one day are week, are covered by this provision.

The Italian Unions belonging to UNI Global Union are please to announce that on March 31th  a new National Collective Agreementwas signed for the Financial Sector.

During more than 18 months of negotiation for the renewal of the National Agreement for the Banking Sector, the ABI (the Italian Banking Association) emphasized the challenges being faced by the banking industry.

Chile – Press release from Conatracops on the enactment of the new law on Sunday work

The Chilean National Confederation of Commerce, Production and Services, CONATRACOPS, under the terms of the law enacted today Monday 30 March 2014 granting more rest time on Sundays for Chilean commerce workers, notes the following:

The recent law grants retail workers additional Sunday rest days. Currently there are two Sundays a year that are rest days; that number will be increased to seven.

Furthermore, the law is applicable to all workers who work more than 20 hours a week, unless they are contracted to work on Saturdays, Sundays or public holidays.

‘Wealth creators’ are robbing our most productive, such as care workers

George Monbiot reports in the Guardian that care workers and others doing the most useful work to society are being paid the least while bankers and those creating the most harm have the most lucrative pretigious jobs.

Amazon workers in Germany expand strike during the Easter period

Verdi, the United Services Union, is calling on workers at the Amazon distribution centres in Rheinberg and Werne (both in North Rhine Westphalia), Bad Hersfeld (Hesse) and Koblenz (Rhineland Palatinate) to come out on strike once again on Monday and Tuesday (30 – 31 March 2015). The work stoppage will start on Monday with the night shift in Bad Hersfeld. Workers in Rheinberg, Werne and Koblenz will join the strike at the beginning of the early morning shift. The strikes will continue until the end of the late shift on Tuesday.
