Britain’s biggest union, Unite, has joined forces with employers to create a new industry standard apprenticeship for paper and print.
 
The development, which comes during National Apprenticeship Week, is being viewed as a significant boost to training, skills and long-term job security.
 
Unite is working with industry leaders, such as Arjo Wiggins and De La Rue, across the paper and print industries with the aim of developing rigorous training standards and relevant qualifications for apprentices.
 
Commenting, London and Eastern regional officer, Louisa Bull said:
 
“This is great news for both the paper and print sectors. It sends out a strong message to our members that the union and employers are committed to ensuring employees receive a quality, skilled apprenticeship.
 
“Also, our existing members will also have the opportunity to retrain and enjoy long term job security”.
 
Tim Elliott, Unite regional officer in the South East said:
 
“We have known for several years that the closures of the print colleges and the technical schools for papermaking have had a detrimental impact on the training provision within our Industry. 
 
“Not only will this help us put that back in place but it will help us to attract young people.”
