New Delhi 14.01.2014 ­– UNI Global Union urges the rest of India to follow the state of Delhi’s lead and think again about FDI in retail, especially the threat posed by Walmart. The decision by the APP Delhi government is the right one. The APP recognised the threat to employment in Delhi if multinationals, especially Walmart, were allowed to takeover the retail market.

IKEA workers’ rights abuses make headlines at home

IKEA is under increasing pressure to clean up its act worldwide after the retail giant's rights abuses made headlines at home in Sweden.

A string of major disagreements with its own workers in countries outside of Sweden, including an 8 month worker lockout in Canada, is ruining IKEA’s image as a model employer and ethical company.

UNI is calling on IKEA to sign a global agreement which guarantees good standards and workers’ rights throughout the multinational’s global operations.

Contraf-CUT and CWA launches bilingual magazine for Banco do Brasil workers in the US

Published in Portuguese and in English, it highlights the first meeting with Banco do Brasil in the U.S.

The Communication Workers Union of America ( CWA ) , which represents over 700,000 workers in various service sectors in the United States, Canada and Puerto Rico, is distributing a new bilingual English edition of the magazine “O Espelho / The Mirror”  for Banco do Brazil employees in the United States.

The Portuguese edition is already available for  Brazilian bank workers’ unions to be delivered to employees of BB in Brazil .

UNI staff map the road to Cape Town

All regional and sector global unions are represented at the Switzerland gathering, which will also look at organising in Europe, building union power in the services industry, global campaigns, and more.

Meeting in Brussels for the fourth annual General Assembly of EURO-MEI, leaders of media, entertainment and arts unions called for a progressive European policy blue print that invests in people, ensures solidarity, respects and cherishes their cultures and puts quality employment at the heart of a sustainable growth agenda. Affiliates adopted a series of resolutions to give shape to a renewed policy programme. At the heart of its strategic plan, EURO-MEI wants to campaign for policy changes and refocus national and European policies on the people.

METRO Karachi Union Leaders joins Empowerment Course

Presidnet and the General Secretary of the newly formed union in Metro Cash & Carry in Karachi Pakistan participated at the UNI Apro capacity development empowerment course being held in Karachi, Pakistan 10-12 January 2014. IQTIDAR NAQVI President and TAHIR MEHMOOD fell vicitms to union busting strategies of the company and lost their jobs. Metro Cash & Carry management framed unfounded charges and dismissed both of them from their jobs.

Homeplus scraps 0.5 hour contracts in first ever collective bargaining deal

Supermarket workers in South Korea are anticipating a more secure future after Tesco-owned retail chain Homeplus signed its first collective bargaining agreement since opening fourteen years ago.

The Homeplus Labour Union secured the landmark deal after marathon 15-hour negotiations through the night. Critically, the agreement includes a deal to end the company’s controversial 0.5 hour contract system for temporary staff, which pays workers in 10 minute blocks of time.

UNI LCJapan Sectoral Bulletins

UNI Apro Liaison Council Japan has published 3 sectoral bulletins summarizing highlights from the Commerce, ICTS, and Post & Logistic sector.

The Commerce bulletin covers a summary of the commerce sector in Japan, including the formation of UA Zensen, the status of automobile sales and the organisation structure of JAW, and the GFA with Takashimaya Company.

The ICTS bulletin shares ICTS trends in Japan and explains the Information Communication Policy observed in Japan. The bulletin also highlights international and community activities held by ICTJ Japan.
