AIBOBEF settlement elevates permanent part-time sweepers and peons

The All India Bank of Baroda Employees' Federation (AIBOBEF) has signed a Historic Settlement on 31st December 2013 that will elevate all permanent part-time sweepers and permanent part-time  peons on scale wages (1/3,1/2 and 3/4) posted at the Bank's branches/offices in India.

The sweepers and peons will now be converted to full-time sweeper cum peon and full-time peons respectively in a phased manner. This arrangement with be in effect from 1 January 2014.

SL Post workers receive long-due promotion

Over 500 class 2 officers Sri Lanka Postal workers will be receiving their 20 year long-due promotion after Postmaster General Mr. D.L.P. Rohana Abhyaratna and trade unions reached an agreement on 28 November 2013.

“I now qualified for the promotion in 1992, 21 years ago. They have also corrected my position on the seniority list,” said postal worker Chandrika Eladaththe. Chandrika is also the vice president of the National Post and Telecommunication Workers’ Union (NPTWU).

Employee rights ensured in bank recovery and resolution

The directive on a framework for bank recovery and resolution sets out steps and powers to ensure that bank failures across the EU are managed in a way which avoids financial instability and minimises costs for taxpayers. It is considered one of the major steps in developing the Banking Union and the Single Resolution Mechanism.

Financial Times: Philip Jennings calls for end violence in Cambodia

UNI Global Union yesterday led calls in the Financial Times to stop the violence against protesting garment workers in Cambodia. In an article printed on January 7, UNI general-secretary, Philip Jennings said “This current wave of protests is the legitimate reaction of those (Cambodian) workers who deserve a fair wage and decent conditions, and they must not be silenced by violence. Leading retailers should act now against the threat of death and destruction in Cambodia”

Global unions demand justice for Cambodian workers

The ITUC, Global Union Federation IndustriALL and UNI Global Union  have expressed horror at the violent repression of garment worker strikes by security forces and government-backed vigilantes.  Workers had been demonstrating peacefully demanding an increase in the minimum wage. At least four workers were killed and 39 injured during a crackdown by security forces on Friday.
