Philip Jennings, General Secretary of UNI Global Union, was yesterday confirmed as the leader of Swiss regional newspaper, La Côte’s 2013 Personality of the Year. Facing competition from nine other nominees, Jennings finished the first round of voting in pole position with 901 votes. 

Four other candidates, including “Président de la Cantonale de Jeunesses Campagnardes”, Jonas Tavel (679 votes), Swiss navigator Bernard Stamm (469), former “Préfet du District de Nyon” Nelly de Tscharner (241 votes) and entertainers André and Jan Poulie (188 votes), remain in contention for the award in the second round of voting. 

The award is designed to honour the accomplishments of men and women living and working in the Bassin Lémanique.

Jennings’ success is testament to the achievements of the global labour movement and an indication of UNI Global Union’s growing presence and integration into Swiss society.

Moving in to the final round, voting begins again! The poll starts today and ends on the 14th of February. The winner will be announced at a public event the following Friday at Usine a Gaz on the 21st of February.
