India bank employees stage one day strike

Bank employees and officers from 27 public sector banks, including the State Bank of India, 12 private sector and eight foreign banks participated in a day-long strike in India on 18 December 2013.

The strike was called by the United Forum of Bank Unions (UFBU), the umbrella organisation of five employees unions and four officers unions of state-run banks in India.

Joint ETUF Statement on EU Annual Growth Survey

European Trade Union Federations reject Commission’s economic strategy and call upon European Council to follow the ETUC’s proposal for a European investment plan

On 13 November, the European Commission published the Annual Growth Survey (AGS) 2014 which proposes priorities for EU economic policy in 2014. On 19 and 20, December EU heads of state and government will convene in the European Council to discuss the document with a view to approving the Commission’s proposals.

Stronger safeguards for employees under the Single Resolution Mechanism

Yesterday the European Parliament’s Economic and Monetary Affairs committee voted on the legislative proposal for a single resolution mechanism (SRM).

UNI Europa Finance’s passed amendments would secure that procedures for informing and consulting with employees or their representatives throughout the resolution process are safeguarded. Collective agreements, or other arrangements provided for by social partners, are also to remain applicable in the process.

Global Unions Statement on International Migrants’ Day

17 December 2013: The UN established International Migrants’ Day for December 18th to mark the anniversary of the adoption by the General Assembly in 1990 of the international convention on the protection of the rights of migrant workers and members of their families. Global Unions issued a statement calling for respect for migrants, including the full respect of the rights of migrant workers to form and join trade unions.

European Skills Council for Commerce - call for tender

UNI Europa Commerce and EuroCommerce have launched the Sector Council for employment and skills which brings together the main actors in employment, training and education to coordinate skills anticipation and labour shortages in the commerce sector.

The commerce sector will adapt to the current changes in the market by adjusting, modernising and improving the efficiency of its education and training to reflect the needs of its workers and its companies.

Supporting ASEAN's vision of a caring and sharing community

The Forum brought together stakeholders in the region to share and discuss on how CSR can catalyse the achievement of a sustainable, equitable and inclusive ASEAN Community by 2015. It also addressed the need for multi-stakeholder dialogue and cooperation.

Prosegur expands in Australia - still denying workers rights in South America

Prosegur, one of the world´s leading companies in the private security sector has acquired Chubb Security Services in Australia, a company specializing in the cash logistics and ATMs’ operation and servicing sector. The total value of this investment, which will allow Prosegur to strengthen its presence in the Asian-Pacific region, is approximately 95 million euros, including the debt of the acquired company.

UNI Americas moves forward in discussions with Itaú on the Global Framework Agreement

UNI Americas, continental arm of UNI Global Union, met last Monday 16th December with Itaú’s directors in Sao Paulo, advancing negotiations towards the construction and signing of a Global Framework Agreement that will guarantee the Brazilian bank’s employees in all countries of the Americas, the fundamental rights included in the International Labour Organisation (ILO) declaration; unionisation, freedom of association and collective bargaining.
