Guest speakers and affiliates illuminate UNI Communicators Forum

This week, the annual UNI Global Union Communicators Forum in Nyon hosted a wide array of talented communicators. Speakers Fabian Molina, of the Young Swiss Socialist Party and coordinator of the 1:12 initiative, Walton Pantland from Union Solidarity International and Tansy Hoskins, author of “Stitched Up: The Anti-Capitalist Book of Fashion”, were joined by writer and comedian David Schneider and journalist David Levin. UNI affiliates from around the world also shared and presented their successful digital media strategies to the Forum.

Canada pilots same-day parcel delivery

Service expansion is the way forward, says CUPW (Canadian Union of Postal Workers).  

In striking  a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) with Canada Post to introduce a trial of a new same-day parcel delivery service with CUPW, Canada is following many other postal administrations where city center quick parcel deliveries are a valued service for customers. 

Launched in the Greater Toronto Area, the service enables goods ordered from participating retail stores before 1pm to be delivered between 5.30 and 9pm on the same day.

Urgent appeal to SCA to intervene in Familia Colombia

Andy Snoddy,Head of UNI Global Graphical & Packaging, has appealed to SCA to intervene in Familia in Colombia, a producer of hygiene products, which is 50% owned by SCA. He said “SCA is a respected Swedish company committed to ILO standards and to ensuring SCA’s values are shared throughout its supply chain, I am shocked that they have allowed such a vicious anti union campaign to take place in a company in which they have a 50% shareholding”.

Social chaos at Delhaize: UNI stands in solidarity with workers and denounces the scandalous attitude of management

During an Extraordinary Works’ Council meeting on Wednesday the 11th of June, the management of Delhaize Group presented its “Plan for the future”. A future that is catastrophic for workers since it involves the closing of 14 stores deemed 'unprofitable' and the loss of over 2,500 jobs. For the joint trade union front, the reasons given by management does not justify such a social drama.

Australia kicks off International Justice Day for Cleaners and Security Guards

UNI affiliate, United Voice, kicked off International Justice Day for Cleaners and Security Guards for 2014 by protesting outside the Australian Parliament in Canberra.

Cleaners fear that the new conservative government is proposing to  cut workers' wages at federal buildings by 20 per cent and undermine job security when contracts are next signed as part of plan to 'cut red tape'.

Mind the inequality gap - International Justice Day

16 June 2014 - . The average cleaner would have to work over 366 years to earn the same amount as the average CEO of a top bank earns in a year. This is the stark and unacceptable truth being highlighted today on International Justice Day.  International Justice Day is putting the spotlight on low wages and poor work conditions for cleaners and security staff around the world whilst celebrating their major contribution to society.

International Justice Day actions began around the world

UNI affiliated unions around the world are beginning actions to comemorate International Justice Day for Cleaners and Security Workers. The day is a protest against the poor treatment of these workers.

The UNI affiliated union in Turkey Guvenlik-Is has organised its first actions for International Justice Day. The union began by commemorating security workers killed whilst on duty. The demonstration then moved to Antalya airport.

Workers are also demonstrating at Kings Cross station London, in Melbourne, in Amsterdam, in Brussels, in Dublin and in Frankfurt.

Jennings at ILO Conference: “You are the canary in the mine!”

Speaking at the 103rd International Labour Organisation Conference at the United Nations’ Geneva office, UNI General Secretary, Philip Jennings, told the ILO that “workers of the world need a pay rise” and thanked the ILO for speaking out against inequality.

Jennings pointed out that as the wages share of wealth plummets and gender inequality widens CEO pay continues to rocket. This increasing inequality as led to widespread suffering in our economies and communities.
