Phillip Jennings has sent in his `selfie`in support of International justice Day for Cleaners and Security Workers on June 16th - have you?

Affiliates all over the world are being asked to organise events on June 16th to highlight the low pay, long hours, precarious work and unsafe conditions of the Cleaners and Security workers around the world in Property Services. The date commemorates events in 1990 in the USA when protestors from the hugely successful `Justice for Janitors` campaign were attacked and arrested by Police. It has now become a Global day of action.

UNI MEI Global Union stands with 3 500 striking workers of KBS TV

Over 3000 workers at the public broadcaster KBS TV, Korea responded to the call of the unions  and went on a historic strike on May 29 to call for the CEO of KBS, Mr. Kil Hwan-Young to step down.

Kil Hwan-Young has influenced the editorial line of the news department with a number of intervention. The latest incident was him forcing commentators not to criticize the role of the Korea Cost Guards in the Sewol Ferry disaster. He also forced a News Desk Director to resign over his comments on Sewol Ferry tragedy.

UNI Media Advisory: Shareholders beware: Walmart should come with a risk warning

Ahead of today’s Walmart annual general meeting, shareholders are being asked to appreciate the scale of the company’s global failures and demand change from new CEO Doug McMillon. In Mexico, bribery and corruption allegations have continued without any accountability within Walmart being made public; over $400 million spent by Walmart so far on these investigations.  Investors should also be concerned about Walmart's performance across Latin America, including Brazil where it may face fines running into millions of dollars.

Executive Committee meets in the Spanish Republic

The Global Executive Committee met on the 5th and 6th May in Madrid as demonstrations were being held across Spain calling for the abolition of the monarchy. To mark Michele Mullers life long commitment to international trade unionism he was presented with the old flag of the Spanish Republic.

 

The Executive Committee heard reports on improvements to our Global agreements and organising successes around the world and endorsed plans to provide increased resources to affiliates.

New collective agreement secures good working conditions for private sector employees providing care to the elderly in Switzerland

A new collective agreement, successfully negotiated by Swiss UNICARE affiliate UNIA, regulates working conditions in the rapidly expanding private sector of in-home care for the elderly. It establishes minimum wages, as well as working and rest times, and ensures the provision of top quality care.

Workers, Allies Take Their Fight to T-Mobile Annual Meeting

CWAers, joined by student activists from United Students Against Sweatshops and AFL-CIO union supporters, leafleted outside the T-Mobile US annual meeting in Bellevue, Wash. The goal: show shareholders and the public that T-Mobile, despite the advertising dollars spent branding itself as the "cool wireless company," is really just like Walmart, another documented labor law violator.

Solidarity makes a difference!

UNI-LCJ invited Bro. Bones Skulu, President and Bro. Zakari Koudougou, Regional Secretary from UNI Africa on 2 June 2014, to gain further understanding of overview in Africa, especially of fight against Apartheid toward the 4th UNI World Congress in Cape Town in December this year.  More than 70 UNI-LCJ members listened to their stories on history of struggle and realized the importance of human rights and global solidarity.

Las Vegas: Update on Negotiations

Union negotiating committees representing workers at the Golden Gate Hotel and Casino reached a tentative agreement for a new five-year contract with the company on June 1. This agreement will cover 44 thousand workers, protecting their health benefits and pensions, improves housekeeping working conditions, and facilitates workers’ return to work in food and beverage jobs. UNI Gaming congratulates Culinary Workers Local 226 and Bartenders Local 165, Nevada affiliates of UNITE HERE, on this important win.

FORUM: Human rights for older persons in Europe: Who cares?

To mark the World Awareness Day on Elder Abuse, AGE (AGE is a European network of around 165 organisations of and for people aged 50+  representing directly over 30 million older people in Europe) is co-organising, together with the Council of Europe and the European Commission, a stakeholder seminar on older people's human rights in the area of long-term care. The event, which will take place in Brussels on 23th June, will examine how to strenghten legal protection against elder abuse.

Strike by the employees of Tunisie Factoring

Brother Noomen Gharbi, Deputy General Secretary of the Federation of Banks and Financial Establishments of the Tunisian General Labour Union (UGTT) and Vice-President of UNI Africa Finance, has informed us that following a decision to strike by the employees of Tunisie Factoring, and the marathon negotiations that ensued both within the company and also at the general labour inspectorate, the senior management of the company has chosen to bury its head in the sand.
