Taxation and the redistribution of wealth looks set to dominate the economic and political agenda in the twenty-first century. Inequality is currently the buzzword amongst academics, politicians and business leaders around the world, and the redistribution of wealth is the logical and most efficient means of addressing the problem. Tax avoidance and offshore finance are the primary obstacles to a coherent redistribution of wealth. Without a re-evaluation of taxation in the modern global economy, we will have to endure a future of poverty, state failure and conflict.

Zero Hour Contracts: UK exclusivity ban not enough

The UK government has today moved to ban the exclusivity clauses in Zero Hours Contracts, which prevent people from working for another employer, even when their contract does not guarantee any actual work. This change will affect only 125,000 of the 1.4 million UK workers bound by such contracts and fails to address the real concerns workers and communities have around the use of such contracts.

Brazilian banks praised for signing up to OECD guidelines on business conduct for multinationals

UNI America's says a group of leading banks and other public companies in Brazil are to be applauded for committing to the OECD Guidelines on business conduct for multinationals.

Representatives from the Bank of Brazil, Caixa Economica Federal, Eletrobras and Itaipu signed up to the OECD Guidelines earlier this week during the International Day of Finance, celebrating 43 years of the International Affairs Secretariat (SAIN) of the Brazilian Ministry of Finance.

Joint Union Management visit to UNI headquarters

The Danish affiliated union FS Forbundnet took part in a joint delegation with management representatives to the UNI HQ in Nyon, Switzerland. Managers from Securitas, G4S and Loomis were part of the group who spent an afternoon with UNI staff, learning about UNI^s Rena Plaza campaign and the processes of the Bangladesh Accord. They also had a presentation on organising in Africa and the importance of global agreements in relation to human rights and the raising of standards. The group was brought to UNI by Forbundnet President Peter Jorgensen.

Trade Unions Recognized in Private Banks: Supreme Court Bangladesh

The Supreme Court in Bangladesh has ruled in favour of the registration of City Bank Karmachari Parisad (City Bank Employees Union) on 9th March 2014, disqualifying City Bank Bangladesh writ to quash the registration of the union.

Employees from City Bank Bangladesh had formed a union and registered with the Registrar of Trade Onions on 21 January 2013 but faced opposition from their employer.

Added convenience for parcels at Royal Mail part of agenda for growth

Royal Mail is offering 3 new services making it more convenient to receive and send parcels for its customers.

"Parcelforce" is a pick up from home service which allows customers to send parcels from home, while "Delivery to neighbour" is on the way to become a standard practice so that if a customer is not at home they try and deliver to a neighbour rather than taking back to the delivery office.

Finally Royal Mails offers a "Click and Collect" service, allowing customers to pick up their parcels from a local Post Office at their convenience.

The pursuit of profit in Korea's health care system are at the heart of the huge struggle going on in Korea today.

The members of the Korean Healthcare and Medical Workers' Union (KHMU) are on the front lines of this struggle, as is their President Sister Yoo Ji-Hyun who is right now on a hunger strike in opposition to the huge changes proposed to health care in Korea. These changes would see the pursuit of profit prioritised over the health and well being of Korean people and are strongly opposed by workers in the sector as well as the general public.
