Nordic Cleaning Unions meet in Finland to plan organising

UNI affiliated unions from Finland, Sweden, Norway and Denmark met this weekend to discuss and agree plans for union growth in their sector. Over 40 delegates from 5 trade unions met for 3 days for a programme organised by their organisatuion SUN. SUN is a network for the cleaning sector in the Nordic countries. The SUN President Lise Myrvold set out the challenge for the unions in a sector characterised by low pay and poor conditions.

UNI’s position regarding the decision of the United Nations and the treatment of sovereign debt

UNI hosts « Et Maintenant ? » forum on Nyon in 2030

UNI Global Union has hosted the 5th annual Et Maintenant Forum in Nyon, featuring a host of speakers including journalists, politicians and technological innovators. The theme of the Forum was what the Nyon district will look like in 2030 in terms of housing, employment and way of life. According to recent demographic reports, we can expect a growth in population in the Nyon district of almost 30,000 people, with over 20%  over 65.

DHL Express begins anti-union campaign in India

Global unions ITF and UNI Global Union recently discovered that in India, DHL have begun to carry out a campaign of retaliation and intimidation against union activists. Worker who stand up to management are sent to worksites hundreds of kilometres away separating them from their families and creating unnecessary and unfair financial burdens. These measures are clearly efforts to intimidate workers and to weaken the union.

UNI and IndustriALL demand end to poverty wages in Cambodia

UNI Global Union and IndustriALL Global Union have delivered a message to the Cambodia Mission in Geneva demanding an end to poverty wages in the Asian country’s garment industry.

Representatives from the two unions presented  a letter to the Cambodian Prime Minister urging him to enact an immediate and substantial rise to the minimum wage so that garment workers can live with dignity.

African Security Unions Conference in Nairobi celebrates growth

UNI affiliated trade unions organising in the Security sector have met this week to look at future plans for union organising - and to reflect on 12 months of impressive growth. The conference, which is organised by UNI and funded by the FES Foundation in Germany, has brought together unions from South Africa, Namibia, Congo, Congo DR, Mozambique, Uganda, Tanzania, Kenya, Cameroons, Ivory Coast and Ghana.
