On 30-31 October 2014 took place in Bucharest the Deutsche Telekom CEE Union Alliance annual meeting, organized by UNI Global Union, Friedrich Ebert Stiftung, AFL-CIO Solidarity Centre and FSCOM.
A dozen unions from Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Montenegro, Romania, Serbia, Switzerland and United States participated in the event together with UNI Global Union.
The UNI Metro Global Union Alliance recently held its annual gathering in Istanbul, Turkey under the banner “Building Bridges for Global Union Power”
Metin Ebeturk, President of the host union Soysal-Is, welcomed trade union members and leaders representing 15 countries where Metro Group operates. In his opening remarks President Ebeturk stated:

COWUMA has finally signed the Recognition Agreement with Nampak Malawi Ltd.
The agreement was signed on 29th October 2014 at Nampak offices in Blantyre in the presence of Mr. Ronald Mbewe, Vice President of the Malawi Congress of Trade Unions (MCTU), Mr. Deus Sandram, President of COWUMA, Mr. Simon Itaye, Managing Director of Nampak Malawi Ltd, and a representative from the Ministry of Labour.
An equal pay case taken by New Zealand caregiver Kristine Barlett to argue for higher wages for the primarily female caregiver workforce has been successful, with the employer appeal being dismissed in the courts yesterday.
The case taken by Service and Food Workers' Union (SFWU) member Barlett, was subsequently joined by more than 2500 caregivers from both the SFWU and New Zealand Nurses Organisation. Together they argued that if the work was done by men the pay would be higher.
Workers at the 6,000-employee call center company Atento Servicios in Mexico face daily challenges on the job. These mostly young workers make low wages, work long shifts, face high stress demands from callers, and are subjected to yelling, sexual harassment, and other abuses. They are treated like an expendable workforce and are hired and fired at a nearly 80 percent annual turnover rate.
