Procedure started to create a European Works Council at Crédit Mutuel Nord Europe

On 7 November 2014, trade union delegates of Crédit Mutuel Nord Europe met in Brussels following an invitation of UNI Europa Finance. French and Belgian trade unions organising in the group had sent a letter requesting the setting up of a European Works Council (EWC) in September. By law, the company has to convene a constitutive meeting within six months. While waiting for management’s response, the trade unions concerned have formed a transnational trade union alliance.

Network Gender Project

The final Conference for the European Project: Network Gender, organized by CCOO, with the participation of CWU, CGIL and UNI Europa, was held in Madrid in October 2014.

The main objective of this project has been to analyse the regression in Europe of certain issues like employment, public services, women workers’ rights, etc., as a consequence of the economic and financial crisis, followed by the austerity measures established by certain governments which have affected the welfare State, deepening its consequences.

UNI enters into Global Agreement with AEON – Japan’s retail giant

We are delighted to announce a significant breakthrough with the signature of a global framework agreement by UNI Global Union and UA Zensen with Japanese retail giant AEON.

AEON is Japan’s largest retailer and aims to be Asia’s number one regional retailer. AEON employs 420,000 staff and is present in 13 countries.

UA Zensen is Japan’s largest union with 1.51 million members and a strong profile in the retail sector. It was a key driver for the agreement.

Barclays Bank employees joining forces in Zimbabwe

UNI Finance planned a two day organizing workshop for Barclays Bank of Zimbabwe shop stewards from the 31st of October to the 1st of November 2014. The training was organized in collaboration with Zimbabwe Banks and Allied Workers Union, (ZIBAWU) and is part of a larger initiative sponsored by LO-TCO and covering seven countries to strenghten the unions of the Barclays Africa Alliance.

Protests in New Zealand: no trade agreement should be signed without the agreement of people

Thousands of New Zealanders in 17 towns and cities marched in opposition to the TPPA on Saturday 8 November 2015. The UNI Finance affiliate FIRST UNION was the organising centre for the protests which were sponsored by the ITUC affiliated NZ Council of Trade Unions and a number of UNI affiliates.The march was co-organized with the larger Coalition called "Its Our Future” (http://www.itsourfuture.org.nz/ ).

120,000 Belgian workers stage largest union demonstration in 30 years

120.000 Belgian workers have assembled in Brussels for the largest union demonstration in almost thirty years against crippling austerity measures and free market reform.

The protesters came out in force against the governing coalition's plans to freeze workers' wages, lower social security benefits and increase the retirement age from 65 to 67.

Whilst the working people of Brussels will be hardest hit, big business has been spared  - company taxes and social security contributions will  be lowered and there will be further tax breaks for companies.

ECB stress tests – UNI Europa Finance response

At its steering group meeting on 29th October, UNI Europa Finance welcomed the recent stress test carried out by the European Central Bank and the European Banking Authority, aiming to verify that European banks could not fail or require a taxpayer-funded bailout if the economy was to deteriorate quickly. All in all, 25 banks failed the test with 14 banks now having nine months to raise capital or they risk being shut down.

UNI World Congress documents now available online

Anticipation is growing one month ahead of the UNI World Congress with official documents now available online through the Congress website.

The Cape Town event is nearing 2000 participants with the number continuing to grow every day.

The documents, which are available in English, French, German, Spanish and Swedish, include the first report of the resolutions committee containing fourteen motions which will be put to the Congress for endorsement.
