UNI French and Tunisian affiliates standing up for press freedom

On the 7th of January, 12 people have lost their lives at the office of the Charlie Hebdo satirical magazine, the worst terrorist attack on France for a decade. The gunmen who spoke French and said they were Al Qaeda headed straight for Stéphane Charbonnier, a senior Charlie Hebdo editor and killed him .Well known for his satirical jibes at politicians, the Pope and the Prophet Mohammed, Mr Charbonnier had received multiple death threats and had lived under police protection for years.

Better Regulation Just Got Worse

On December 18 2014, the European Commission made a highly controversial move when appointing Edmund Stoiber as Special Advisor to the Better Regulation Agenda. With this appointment, it is more and more evident that the Better Regulation Agenda has little to do with social fairness, improving social conditions and battling social inequality. Rather, it seems that the Commission’s policies are for a further deregulation of European (labour) markets and for an internal market strictly catering the needs of businesses, not those of people nor employees.

UNI MEI / Panartes and FIA to support capacity building of media unions in Latin American

At the end of November 2014, UNI MEI and PANARTES members from Latin America gathered with the International Federation of Actors (FIA) in Lima, Peru in the framework of a joint UNI MEI-FIA LA project co-funded by the Swedish International Trade Union Development Co-operation, LO TCO. The project aims to foster capacity building of trade unions representing workers in the audiovisual sector in Latin America, which is witnessing a tremendous growth across all countries in the region.

"Justice for Colombia" calls on Prosegur to end human rights abuses

In a sternly worded letter, the head of  London based NGO "Justice for Colombia" calls on Prosegur CEO to get its house in order in Latin America.

The Director of Justice for Colombia, Mariela Kohon wrote to the Prosegur chief Christian Gut Reveredo citing a litany of disputes, including the dismissal of 300 workers in Paraguay for taking part in a legitimate strike in Paraguay which led to the filing of an ILO complaint in 2013 and numerous incidents documented in the OECD case brought in  2014, including the use of pacto colectivos.
