UNI World Women’s Conference unites against gender inequality

The 4th UNI World Women’s Conference drew to a close yesterday in Cape Town after an immensely successful conference. Hundreds of women assembled in Cape Town to discuss the fight for fairer and more equal society. Featuring an array of vibrant musical and dance performances and impassioned speakers, the Conference saw Denise Mcguire re-elected as the President of UNI Equal Opportunities and passed all five motions unanimously.

Nursing home operator Pro Senectute: reinstate Kathrin Schmid!

Care workers at Swiss nursing home Lindenmatte, in Erlenbach, just lost their union delegate. She was fired for organising a union and speaking up for her workmates.

What happened?

They are a group of nursing home workers who look after the elderly. They work hard and care about the people we work with, who are some of Swiss society’s most vulnerable.

Over the past year and a half these workers formed a union. They did this to help address the high staff turnover, poor working conditions, and low pay.

Breaking Through for Orange Employees

UNI Global Union and the UNI Orange Alliance have signed a ground breaking new Agreement with Orange on health and safety. The Agreement, signed by UNI General Secretary Philip Jennings, William Coker, President of the Alliance and the French unions, CFDT and FO, will become part of the Global Agreement signed between UNI and Orange (France Telecom) in 2006.

Syndicom opposes the closure of print shops and committs to a strong CBA in the graphical industry

The 175 delegates participating in the Assembly of Delegates of Syndicom, which met in Bern on November 29th, noted with concern the planned closure of newspaper print shops in Schlieren (NZZ) and Neuchâtel (SNP). The meeting also denounced the interruption by the association Viscom of the process to declare generally binding collective employment contracts for the printing industry.

Turkish Affiliate Guvenlik-Is Passes 10,000 members mark

The new Turkish union for Security workers Guvenlik-Is has now grown to over 10,000 workers, from just 800 exactly a year ago. This represents dramatic growth, inspired by UNI`s `Breaking Through`strategy and the clearly illustrates the urgent need for a union for these workers. Not only have these workers being signed up but the union has also got to the stage where 2,000 of these workers are covered by a new collective bargaining agreement and another 5,000 are close to achieveing the 40% density required under a law for a recognition and collective bargaining agreement.

The Select Committee welcomes the CEO and Corporate Managers' willingness to open up a discussion on the Joint Declaration on Responsible Sales (UNI Finance campaign “Sales vs. Advice) in a short time. Nevertheless the Corporate management was reminded a Global Framework Agreement, jointly signed with UNI Global, could have to guarantee minimum rights, mainly with respect to information dissemination and consultation in all countries.

Social Dialogue: Hairdressing Sector social partners adopt Joint Resolution on “Securing employment in the hairdressing sector”

At its meeting in Brussels, Belgium, on 13 October 2014, the Sectoral Social Dialogue Committee (SSDC) on Personal Services adopted the Joint Resolution: “Securing employment in the hairdressing sector”.

The Resolution addresses key labour market developments in the Hairdressing sector and recommends key actions for the future:

Coiffure EU and UNI Europa Hair & Beauty observe with concern that the barber and hairdresser profession in Europe is under threat of increasing marginalisation.
