Canada: landmark ruling backs right to strike

Canada’s Supreme Court has affirmed the right to strike is an essential part of a collective bargaining process and protected under the Canadian constitution. The Supreme Court found that a law which denied the right to strike for a number of public sector workers, with no alternative mechanism, was unconstitutional.

The Court reaffirmed that the right to strike is protected by ILO Convention 87 on Freedom of Association, among other international treaties and comes at a time when business has launched its big guns

Bangladesh: 13 people killed in fire at packaging factory

On 31st January 2015 a fire swept through a plastics packaging factory in Dhaka, Bangladesh's capital, killing at least 13 people and injuring many others. The fire was brought under control by late on Saturday night and a search was under way for more victims. It is not clear how many people might be missing, but survivors say that about 70 workers were inside the building when the fire broke out at the five-storey factory in the city's Mirpur district. The factory recycled plastic and made packaging for food for the domestic market.

EU Commerce Social partners’ takes action to boost employment opportunities for young people and invest in quality jobs

On 27th January 2015, social partners from 14 EU Member States held the final conference of a one-year project entitled ‘More and better jobs for young people in commerce’.

The main focus of the project was about increasing opportunities for young people and for companies to invest in quality jobs. European social partners identified and analysed challenges and solutions, as well as national best practices in the areas of employment, recruitment and solidarity between youngest and older workers.
