After a spectacular display of women unionists from around the world singing and dancing came to an end, so did the 4th UNI World Women's Conference in Cape Town.

For two days more than 500 women from trade unions around the world made Cape Town their home.

The Opening Ceremony, which took place in the morning of the first day, was a display of the vast cultural richness of South Africa. It was also a reminder, through the voice of the women on stage, of the many obstacles women still face at the workplace and why it is so important to focus on their issues.

The Histadrut signs an agreement raising the minimum wage in Israel

On December 3, an agreement raising the minimum wage in the economy was signed between Histadrut Chairman Avi Nissenkorn, and Chairman of the Federation of Israeli Economic Organizations, Zvi Oren *** The minimum wage will be raised by NIS 700 (equivalent to $175.26) and will stand at NIS 5,000 (equivalent to $1,251.87) *** The Histadrut Chairman, Avi Nissenkorn: "Today we bring a real message to employees in Israel. We declared that we will not be satisfied with an increase of only NIS 200 (equivalent to $50.07) and we fulfilled this promise.

Prosegur is suspended from the ILO’s SCORE Programme in Colombia

This week, the International Labour Organization (ILO) decided to suspend the private security company Prosegur, from its SCORE programme in Colombia. The suspension by the ILO follows a number of complaints about human and labour rights abuses by Prosegur in Colombia and Peru. The concerns raised by local union Sintravalores and UNI were shown to be legitimate when last week a Prosegur union leader in Neiva, Colombia was punched in his mouth by the Head of Security inside the company’s premises.

Behind the scenes in Bollywood - working towards a healthy and safe work environment

The unions and associations of the Mumbai film industry came together last week to discuss health and safety in Bollywood. A seminar was organised on 26-27 November in Mumbai in the framework of a project funded by LO-TCO, with a view to discuss the working conditions in Bollywood and to look for ways for improving the situation.

Sharon Wilde (pictured) has years of organising experience with the British union GMB, working in the Midlands in the grey industrial areas currently suffering under the austerity politics of an anti trade union government. She has trained and mentored activists and imlemented campaign plans in many different areas and situations. But she never imagined that she would be on the other side of the world, in the busy and demanding environment of building a union for Security Workers in Bangalore in India!

Persistent efforts by a group of committed trade unionists supported by numerous activists working in the IT sectors and their hard work for the past nine years, made it possible - a birth of a new organization; National Confederation UNITES (NCU India), said Christopher Ng UNI Apro Regional Secretary, at the founding conference of the NCU National Confederation of UNITES (Union for IT Enabled Service) in Hyderabad on 30th November 2014.
