At a high-level meeting in Istanbul, Turkey on Wednesday, 4th of February 2015, the President of UNI Affiliate KOOP-IS, Eyüp Alemdar and the CEO of IKEA Turkey, agreed to enter into a process of relationship building and collective bargaining. 

After years of struggle, Koop-Is won recognition from Turkish authorities in January this year after organising around 42% of IKEA workers into the union. The company has issued an appeal against this decision but has stated that a withdrawal of the appeal is being discussed with top management.

Despite the ongoing legal process started by the company, Koop-is is demonstrating its good will be agreeing to enter in negotiations for a first collective agreement.

The union and company management agreed on the need to develop confidence between the two parties and to keep IKEA competitive.

The union will now hold local meetings with its members at IKEA to explain the process and elect representatives for the negotiation committee. This Committee will develop a proposal for a collective agreement which will then be discussed with company management at the next meeting.
