Breaking Through - Rengo Packaging Malaysia Workers WIN Secret Ballot.

Workers win union recognition in Malaysia. The members of Rengo Packaging Employees' Union (Kesatuan Pekerja-Pekerja Rengo Packaging Malaysia Sdn. Bhd.) have won legal union recognition and will begin collective bargaining process. 

The Union won the secret ballot with a huge majority of 81.82%. The success came after an organising campaign supported by LO- TCO and UNI Graphical & Packaging Global Union.

Global dialogue forum at ILO examines Decent Work in retail

At a global dialogue forum hosted by the International Labour Organisation on 22-23 April, workers and employers in the global retail industry came together, along with representatives of various governments, came together to discuss how the diversification of employment relationships in the industry are impacting the International Labour Organizations (ILO) Decent Work agenda.

Rana Plaza Protests in London

Protestors in London have staged actions to commemorate the deaths of 1,138 workers two years after the Rana Plaza factory collapse in Bangladesh. The garment industry in Bangladesh supplies many global brands with their goods but thousands of workers are employed in factories that are unsafe, dangerous and in the case of Rana Plaza, lethal.

The protestors were demanding that companies pay adequate compensation to help victims and their families. As of today the Rana Plaza Compensation Fund is still $6 million short of the $30 million target.

Organizing Women in Contact Centers

“All experience shows us that  when women are at the negotiating table, issues that are important to women are brought to the table.” This was a key message from Denise McGuire – a BT employee and president of global union UNI’s world women’s committee.

Denise was presenting at a European contact centre organising event held in London in February where she outlined the work of UNI for working women. In addition to running mentoring programmes, UNI has recently changed its rules to ensure that a minimum of 40% of all its delegations and decision making bodies are female.

Organising Success in Constantia Flexibles by Basin-Is, Turkey

More than 200 workers (%100 at production) from Constantia Flexibles-Asas Packaging /Turkey were organised by Basin-Is, UNI Graphical & Packaging (G&P) affiliate in Turkey. Constantia Flexibles is one of the world leaders in flexible packaging with more than 8,000 employees and 43 manufacturing sites in 18 countries. Recently 73% ownership of the company was acquired by Wendel Investment Group.
