Breaking Through: Respect for decent work!

1 May 2015 -- Richard Elliott

Today millions of workers across the world are out on the streets to celebrate the dignity of labour and protest at the rise of inequality. International Worker’s Day has its roots in a strike for the 8 hour working day in Chicago, 1866 in which several protestors were killed. More than a 150 years later, workers are still having to fight for their basic human rights at work and the struggle goes on.

The UNI family is out in force today taking part in celebrations all over the world and you can follow them on social media.

30 April 2015 -- uni-americas

Dear brothers and sisters,

We commemorate this 1st of May, 2015 in a time when workers’ struggles are increasing to secure the right to freedom of association, collective bargaining, and especially, the right to strike which is constantly threatened by the pressure of corporations and some governments who want to eliminate it. This 1st of May we will be exactly one year away from the 130th Anniversary of the start of the huge strike for an eight-hour day among other claims, which resulted in the execution of the Chicago martyrs.
