Urgent action needed to reduce alarming levels of youth unemployment

UNI Europa Youth and sister European Trade Union Federations jointly wrote to the European Commission on 12 May. They urge the European Commission to act to reduce the dramatic levels of youth unemployment across the EU. Currently, the EU average for youth unemployment stands at over 20% and is up to nearly 60% in some countries such as Greece and Spain.

United Sectoral Strike in Spain by UGT-FES and FSC CC.OO on 20&21 May

Sectorial strike for our future, for our rights: In defence of Collective Rights:

UGT-FES and FSC CC.OO have decided to go on sectorial strike on May 20 and 21 following the failure at the last mediation process on sectoral level collective bargaining.

The main conflicted is that the Employers’ representatives have continued to pressure on unions to eliminate some of the rights at collective agreement in return of wage increase.

Resistance of the Finance Sector Workers in Antigua

Almost all Branches of major Banks in Antigua including Royal Bank of Canada, Scotia Bank, First Caribbean Bank and Bank of Antigua were forced to close or operate with skeletal staff today as the ABWU Antigua Workers union called on all Finance Sector Workers to demonstrate their resistance to the proposed Banking Act 2015 which will have a very negative impact the priority and right to Severance Pay Benefits as mandated under the existing Labour Code of Antigua.

UNI Equal Opportunities launches the Mentoring Program in Apro region

On the 15th and 16th of May, 2015, the UNI Equal Opportunities Department with the support of FES will launch in the UNI Apro region the Mentoring Program in Singapore.

The program, which has successfully been implemented in Europe and the Americas, will begin its two year implementation period with an Opening Workshop. The workshop, will have the participation of 6 tandems with women from 7 different countries (Phillipines, Malaysia, Indonesia, India, Nepal, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka).

Prosegur and Brinks workers in Chile on indefinite strike

On Friday, around 600 Prosegur and Brinks workers began a strike after failing to reach consensus in a collective bargaining dialogue that takes place every two years. Workers in Chile are demanding an increase in wages and bonuses, as well as an improvement in their working conditions. Police have used water cannons and tear gas on workers, and according to the union, the company has been illegally using violent strike breakers again.

Over 100 NGOs urge EU Commission to make the lobby register legally binding

The Alliance for Lobbying Transparency and Ethics Regulation (ALTER-EU) [1] has urged European Commission Vice President Frans Timmermans to take strong and urgent action to create a high-quality and legally-binding EU lobby transparency register in a letter sent to him today, signed by over one hundred non-governmental organisations and trade unions, and supported by the European Parliament Intergroup on Integrity [2].

Protest in front of the Tesco hypermarket in Łódź, Poland

On 7th May NSZZ "Solidarność" Union members from Tesco Poland Ltd. organised the protest in front of one of Tesco hypermarkets in Łódź (central Poland). The protest was carried out to defend Magdalena Zydler who is the deputy chairwoman of our Union in Tesco Poland. The employer fired her in March 2015 because of her Unionist engagement.
