UNI / FES Mentoring Program launched in Asia

On May 15-16, 2015 in Singapore, UNI Equal Opportunities and UNI Apro Women with the FES support, launched the first Workshop for the Mentoring Program in the Asia Pacific.  21 women leaders and activists forming 10 tandems from 7 countries in Asia (Bangladesh, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, Nepal, Philippines and Sri Lanka) participated in the workshop.  They represented 17 unions from different UNI sectors such as Care Services, Commerce, Finance, Graphical, ICTS and Post & Logistics and were nominated by the Liaison Council of each country.

Prosegur Chile ofrece sindicato en huelga menos aumento de salario

En la cuarta semana de huelga, Prosegur se sentó a negociar por primera vez con su sindicato de transporte de valores en la Dirección de Trabajo en Chile. Sin embargo, su oferta está por debajo de lo que la empresa acordó con sindicatos menos representativos del mismo segmento. En la fecha de ayer esta oferta inferior fue rechazada por la comisión negociadora del Sindicato Nacional de Prosegur Ltda. UNI está preocupada que Prosegur no esté negociando de buena fe, utilizando el conflicto para presionar a su sindicato más importante de transporte de valores, en vez de buscar un acuerdo.

UNI Europa Commerce leaders approve action plan for the next 4 years

At the UNI Europa Commerce Conference in Gdansk, Poland, trade union leaders from all over Europe approved an action plan to strengthen the position of commerce workers in a new world of work.

UNI Europe Head of Commerce Laila Castaldo said: ‘Today, we have agreed an ambitious action plan for the commerce sector to be carried out together with affiliates all over Europe.’

UNI Europa Commerce supports solidarity action with Polish Auchan workers

Coinciding with UNI Europa’s Commerce Conference in Gdansk, Poland, host union Solidarnosc today 3 June organised a European solidarity action with Auchan workers in Poland.

After the takeover of Real stores from Metro, Auchan has become the biggest supermarket chain in Poland with a total of around 20,000 employees. The company has refused to enter into a dialogue with the union about the issues put forward by the employees and union members as well as discriminated against union activists, creating a climate of pressure and intimidation.

Jennings to OECD: it's time to ditch the austerity mentality

UNI General Secretary Philip Jennings took workers’ issues to the OECD this week, urging new thinking in finance and economics to grow jobs and combat the threat of inequality.

Speaking at the OECD debate “Investing in the Future: People, Planet, Prosperity” in Paris, Jennings warned that austerity measures in Europe had failed.

“We have lived through a very special period of economic history and now 30 million more people are out of work and our labour markets are still struggling,” he said.

UNI Europa Commerce Conference Kick-off

Yesterday, 1 June,  UNI Europa opened its commerce conference in Gdansk, Poland – the City in which trade unionism in Poland was born under the leadership of Lech Walesa. The Conference is taking place in the European Solidarity Centre, newly opened in 2014, situated in the shipyards where labour history was written in the 70s and 80s of the last century.

Speakers reflected on the history of the conference’s location  while pointing out the challenges commerce unions in Europe face.

UMT launches election campaign for recognition in Morocco

Workers in Morocco are voting this week in national elections for delegates in both workplace and national Works Councils. Morocco`s largest trade union the UMT (Union Marocaine du Travail) is standing candidates across many sectors of the eceonomy but for the first time has launched full `lists`of candidates in the increasingly important Contact Centre sector. The elections are held every 6 years by law. This sector is the fast growing in Morocco and employs over 70,000 workers who are eligible to vote.
