U.S Congressmen: FTA labour commitments not being achieved

This week’s labour news did not come from Colombia but from Washington DC, where Congressmen Jim McGovern and George Miller presented on Tuesday a report on the progress of the Labour Action Plan (LAP) between Colombia and the United States as a pre-condition for the implementation of the FTA between the two countries.

Unite post office managers strike in the UK

Members of CMA-Unite in nearly 300 Crown Post Offices are on strike today after more than a year of bargaining with Post Office Ltd. has failed ot produce a fair pay settlement for the managers working in the crown post office network. 

The union has already rejected an offer of non-pensionable lump sum payments, noting that members have not had a pay rise in Post Offices since June 2011. Current negotiations were to cover the period June 2012 - May 2013.

Prosegur found guilty of moral damage and ordered to pay retroactive compensation for dangerous work

On 24 October, Judge David Sérvio Coqueiro dos Santos, of the Labour Court of Campina Grande (PB), ordered Prosegur, Nordeste Segurança and Transbank to immediately comply with Law 12.740/2012, regardless of the Ministry of Labour and Employment’s (MTE) regulation, retroactive to the effective date of the law. He also ruled that they will  pay $ 100,000 for collective moral damage.

Resorts World New York Racino workers win a ground-breaking agreement

After two years of negotiations, the contract settlement was reached between the New York Hotel Trades Council, UNITE HERE’s affiliate in New York City and Genting, the Malaysian based gaming giant.

It covers almost 1,400 workers at the "Racino" at Aquaduct racetrack in New York. It is the most exciting victory of the union as the contract will literally and instantly lift over a thousand workers and their families out of poverty. The average wages will nearly double right now and by 2016 will come close to three times what workers made prior to having a union.

UNI Commerce congratulates workers for victory at Leroy Merlin Turkey

After 16 days of strike, Sosyal Is won a fight against Leroy Merlin for wage increase and better working conditions for its employees. Employer responded to all trade union demands to a great extent and the collective agreement was successfully concluded.

At the end of the first strike at do-it-yourself market and at shopping malls in Turkey, Leroy Merlin workers gained a collective agreement for three years, ensured protection of union rights and job security of its members, acquired a fair wage increase, a package of social benefits and advancement of working conditions.

UNI chief’s message to young leaders

30 World Economic Forum Fellows hoping to become the global leaders of tomorrow have visited UNI HQ for a meeting on leadership and the labour movement with General Secretary Philip Jennings.

The Fellows, who are at the beginning of a three-year programme, were selected by the World Economic Forum in the hope of finding the next generation of leaders for both the forum, and the world as a whole.

Postal union strikes in Morocco

FNPL-UMT, the Moroccan postal union, has called a national strike of postal workers in Morocco as difficult negotiations with Poste Maroc continue. Over the past week, FNPL members have demonstrated across Morocco with a series of sit-ins, demonstrations and even hunger strikes to protest Poste Maroc’s unserious bargaining position. Several hunger strikers received medical attention yesterday and were advised to cease the hunger strike.
