Trade Union leaders from across the world met in Dublin for the 2013 UNI Global Union World Executive, a year ahead of the World Congress in Cape Town.

UNI Commerce supports the Usdaw Respect Week against violence at work

On November the 11th, UNI affiliated Unions Usdaw launches Respect Week saying 'abuse is not a part of a shopworkers job as a response to increasing third party violence in shops.

Respect for Shopworkers Week 2013 takes place on 11 – 15 November. It is an annual event where shopworkers talk to the public about the problems of violence threats and abuse, asking customers to 'keep their cool'. Part of the campaign will be encouraging shopworker not to take abuse as part of the job and report incidents to their manager.

Royal Mail talks extended again

Two weeks after a planned nationwide strike was called off due to progress in talks with Royal Mail, the Communication Workers Union in the UK have again announced that talks are progressing. The union have announced a seven day extension in the validity of the existing industrial action ballot as they continue in talks with Royal Mail following the British post office's privatisation late last month.

Larry Elliott: 10 lessons from the global economic crisis

The Guardian’s Economics Editor Larry Elliott has revealed his ten lessons learnt from the global economic crisis.

Speaking at UNI Global Union’s World Executive in Dublin, Elliott compared today’s crisis to the 1973 recession which affected nearly all major economies in the world and put an end to the post-Second World War economic boom.

“The 1973 crisis came at the end of a 25 year golden age of social democracy built around the idea that when an economy grew, everybody gained a little,” Elliott said.

Dublin hosts UNI World Executive

Trade Union leaders from across the world are arriving in Dublin for the 2013 UNI Global Union World Executive, a year ahead of the World Congress in Cape Town.

UNI's Irish affiliates will host this year’s event, which begins in full on Tuesday and will take place at the CWU headquarters in the capital. Irish unions were invited to host to commemorate the centenary of the Dublin Lockout, the major industrial dispute which rocked the country in 1913.

European trade unions push for European investment plan

UNI Europa strongly supports the ETUC initiative to change the direction of the EU’s economic policy from austerity to sustainable growth. This could create up to 11 million new jobs.

The Executive Committee of the European Trade Union Confederation (ETUC) unanimously adopted  “A new path for Europe: ETUC plan for investment, sustainable growth and quality jobs” on 7 November 2013.

Colombia: SINTRAPULCAR and Kimberly Clark multinational sign Collective Agreement

After about eight months of discussions on the list of demands presented by the union, and the firm position of the workers to reach an agreement through dialogue, an agreement was signed that will benefit hundreds of workers of the multinational.

In April this year, a group of workers decided to form a union at the Kimberly Colpapel plant (a subsidiary of the U.S. multinational Kimberly Clark), located in Tocancipá, Cundinamarca. The main objective was to fight for greater job security and better working conditions.
