UNI Europa Youth fully supports Italian Banking Unions General Strike

UNI Europa Youth fully supports the general strike of workers and Trade Unions of banking sector in Italy to be held on 31 October 2013.

In September the Italian banking association ABI broke the National Collective Agreement for the entire banking sector.

ABI, guided by top managers that receive bonuses and wages of millions euros every year, threatens leaving 309000 banks employees without and their rights and thousands of job cuts because the contract is economically too expensive for banks.

Kenya Security Union`s 4,500 New Members

The UNI affiliate in Kenya - the  KNPSWU - has recruited 4,500 new members, all of whom are employed by G4S, in under 3 months . They have also signed a new collective bargaining agreement with KKS, a large security company based in Kenya and have been lobbying the Government as it prepares the new Private Security Industry Regulation Bill through Parliament.

Italy: October 31st strike in the financial sector - UNI support

Unions, and FABI on the frontline, are holding a "one day" general strike on October 31st. It will be the first general strike in the Financial Sector in 13 years.

This is in reaction to the fact that on September 16, ABI, the Italian Banking Association, cancelled the Collective Agreement for the entire Banking Sector signed on January 2012 and valid until June 2014.

Moroccan postal workers continue sit-in and hunger strike

The office of the Moroccan President has said it will consider intervention in the dispute between postal workers and their management following a written request from UNI Global Union’s General Secretary.

In a letter to Philip Jennings, the General Secretary of the FNPL UMT union, Noureddine Soulaik, says that his members will remain vigilant, however, towards both the company’s management and the government.

The Caribbean Congress of Labour held their 18th Triennial Congress in Bahamas on 21-25 October 2013.The Congress theme “Re organising CCL to Confront a Changing Global and Regional Economic Environment” was explored at a pre-conference workshop by the 40 delegates attending the event.Opening remarks were made by Sen. David Mossiah, President of CCL and Hon D Shane Gibson, Minister of Labour & National Insurance also addressed the Congress.

Brazil: The lack of Dialogue in Prosegur

Brazilian union representing cash in transit workers ​​in the State of Espírito Santo, SINDFORTES, is one more witness of Prosegur practices on the opposite way of the dialogue.

Problems faced by SINDFORTES are unfortunately not only present locally, they are also found, as has already been seen and reported in Paraguay and Colombia. Brazil is embarrassed to be part of the list of countries where workers' complain against Prosegur.

HP to dismiss another 7000 workers in Europe

According to members of the UNI Europa/IndustriALL-Europe HP European Alliance, HP is eliminating another 7000 jobs in EMEA (Europe, Middle East, Africa) in addition to the 8000 redundancies already announced. All told these cuts are part of CEO Meg Whitman’s decision to cut more than 29,000 jobs. Most of these new lay-offs, according to the source, will come from ‘old’ EU countries.

The majority of these jobs are in the Enterprise Services (ES) division, which is primarily the former EDS, a company HP bought in 2008.
