More than 2,000 Marks and Spencer’s employees took industrial action across Ireland on Saturday December 7 after management unilaterally decided to change their working conditions.
In late September, Marks and Spencer began negotiations with Mandate and SIPTU regarding the closure of four stores in Tallaght, Naas, Dun Laoghaire and Mullingar, with the loss of 180 jobs.
In addition, other cost saving proposals included a reduction in the premium for working on Sundays and public holidays, the elimination of the Christmas bonus and cuts to the number of section managers.
“We hope that unions can adopt a democratic industrial relation with their companies so that they can secure the decent work agenda based on labour laws,” said Hiroshi Yamakawa, Assistant General Secretary of UA Zensen. “The union and management first need to have mutual respect and stand on equal footing so that unions can be free from subordinate workplace positions and for democratic industrial relations to be possible.”
Workers of CLICO and British American Insurance Companies picketed the Central Bank and Ministry of Finance in Port of Spain Trinidad on December 2 and followed this up on December 3 by picketing the CLICO office in the city.
