Qatar construction site: concerns are raised about poor labour standards

Talks in Zurich between FIFA, the German Football Federation and trade unions have increased the pressure for labour standards reform in Qatar, the hosts of the 2022 World Cup.

The meeting took place amid growing concern about labour rights and working conditions in Qatar where 1.3 million migrant workers are employed.

Many hundreds of workers are estimated to have died on construction sites in Qatar since it was named host of the World Cup and it’s feared that thousands more could be killed without stricter labour standards.

Unicredit European Works Council pursuing the signing of a GFA

Unicredit EWC intends to pursue the signing of a Global Framework Agreement (GFA), jointly with UNI Finance, to guarantee employees' fundamental rights and enhance industrial relations in all the countries where the Group is active.

In the present macro-economic difficulties in all countries, Unicredit EWC recognizes the vital importance of Social Dialogue and in particular the importance of reaching an agreement on the signing of a Global Framework Agreement.

ILO: Better working conditions key to Bangladesh growth

Improving working conditions is critical to bringing sustainable long-term growth to Bangladesh – this is the key finding of a major new report by the ILO examining the country’s garment industry.

The report, Bangladesh: Seeking better employment conditions for better socioeconomic outcomes, says unregulated growth in the garment industry has resulted in poor conditions in the majority of workplaces and has led to some of the worst industrial disasters in history.

GPEU wins UNI Freedom from Fear Award

Grameen Phone Employees Union (GPEU), the Telenor subsidiary in Bangladesh, started its journey in 1996 and quickly rose to become the country’s largest corporate entity. Despite a stable profit curve, Grameen Phone’s Management undertook various cost cutting initiatives and neglected the rights of workers to have decent work. This was boldly carried out by the Management who infringed local laws when it failed to share 5% of company profits with its employees.

Union engineer wins Polhem Prize

It is not everyday that trade unionists rub shoulders with royalty, but that's precisely what happened when Petra Wadström was announced as the Gold Medal winner of the Polhem Prize.

His Royal Highness, Prince Carl Philip of Sweden presented the Polhem Prize and a cheque for SEK 250,000 to the inventor at a glittering awards ceremony in the tunnels of Norra Länken (the North link), a 4 km long tunnel connecting the highway with Värtahamnen, one of Stockholm's harbours.

On November 12-13, Trade Union leaders from across the world met in Dublin for the 2013 UNI Global Union World Executive, a year ahead of the World Congress in Cape Town. The  meeting discussed several draft papers for next year's World Congress, such as "Including You to win union growth", "Including You in taking back our economy" and "Including You in a new world of work".

Global unions back Philippines calls for climate action

Global unions are strongly backing calls by the Philippines government for urgent action on climate change following the recent Typhoon that cost thousands of lives in the Southeast Asian country.

Typhoon Haiyan ripped through the nation earlier this month causing widespread devastation. According to the United Nations, around 11 million people have been affected, up to ten thousand may have died, and many more have been left homeless.

Unions and workers mobilize around the world to demand Walmart pays a living wage

Geneva, 18 November 2013 - During a week of global action 18-24 November, UNI Global Union, and its affiliates are embarking on a series of actions to expose Walmart’s bad labour practices from the store across the entire supply chain. Walmart workers want to know how can a company that earns an average profit of $1.8 million every hour pay its U.S. sales associates an average of less than $9 an hour, a wage below the poverty line.
