Representatives of graphical and packaging unions from Argentina, Brazil, Bolivia, Chile, Colombia, Peru, Mexico and Venezuela have sent their messages of solidarity to leaders and immigrant community members who are fasting to obtain the understanding of members of the US Congress and approve an immigration reform which will mean a path to citizenship for over 11 million immigrants in the USA.

Uniting and unionising America's finance workers

Trade unions in the Americas are leading a new charge to organise low-wage bank workers in the United States.

Almost one third of the US bank tellers rely on public assistance, while the top CEOs income continue to increase, according to the Committee for Better Banks, a coalition of labor advocacy groups that published a new report on the 4th of december. The report also says that there are now 19,800 fewer people employed in the financial industry in New-York city than before 2008.

CWU and Royal Mail reach negotiators' agreement

UNI's UK affiliate the CWU and Royal Mail have reached a negotiators' deal following the recent privatisation of the postal company.

Coming after extensive negotiations, the proposed agreement covers pay, legal protections for terms and conditions, industrial stability and pensions, according to a statement released by the union.

The proposal will be considered by the CWU postal executive before being subject to a ballot of the union’s members. Further details will follow the conclusion of the postal executive.

UNI Graphical & Packaging Management Committee meets in Belfast

UNI Graphical & Packaging met for the first time in Belfast on 14th November. Reports were made on the problems facing our members around the world and on the successes of affiliated unions in organising in multinational companies such as Amcor, MMP, and Kimberly Clark. A detailed action plan for 2014 was agreed which included targets for global agreements and organising projects in Poland, Malaysia, Kenya and Colombia.

EMPL Coordinators address Social Partners' Agreements and REFIT consequences

On 20 November 2013, European Parliament Employment Committee Coordinators discussed with Commissioner Andor the state-of-play over Social Partner Agreements. Social Partner Agreements must be transposed into law in line with Treaty provisions. During their last meeting, the EMPL Coordinators debated with Commissioner responsible Andor, the legal transposition of three agreements signed by employees’ and employers’ organisations at EU level - in the hairdressing, inland waterways and sea fisheries sectors.

UNI's Turkish affiliates support strikers at Istanbul Airport

UNI's Turkish affiliates meeting in Istanbul to develop their Breaking Through plans for organising workers in UNI sectors in Turkey, made a resolution supporting striking Turkish Airline workers. Yakup Akkaya, the President of Basin-Is speaking at a press conference at Istanbul Airport, presented to the press and striking workers, the statement from the UNI Affiliates. He said that he was bringing the solidarity of UNI Global union and its Turkish affiliates who demand the reinstatement of the fired workers.

Including You in planet recovery

Climate change threatens everything for which the labour movement stands including fairness, social justice and decent work. This was the message UNI Chief Philip Jennings delivered in a keynote speech to the W3 International Conference in Toronto.

Invited by UNI affiliate the Canadian Union of Postal Workers (CUPW) - the event co-sponsors - Jennings used the speech to introduce his theme, “Including You in Planet Recovery.”

Annual Growth Survey 2014 – European Commission sets priorities for economic policy in Europe

On 13 November, the European Commission opened the 2014 European Semester of Policy Coordination by publishing this year’s Annual Growth Survey (AGS). With the AGS, the Commission sets priorities for EU Member States’ economic policies in 2014. To ensure that Member States follow the demands set out in the AGS the Commission will soon begin to draw up its Country-specific Recommendations.
