The Portuguese government has confirmed today that 70% of the national post service share capital (105m shares) will be floated on the Lisbon Stock Exchange.

The UNI Europa Post & Logistics committee, which collectively represents the more than two million postal workers in Europe, stands in solidarity today with our colleagues in the Portuguese trade unions SNTCT and Sindetelco as they confront the privatisation of CTT Correios Portugal.

UNI Europa Post & Logistics has long rejected privatisation of postal services. In its recent conference, held in Portugal, the European Post & Logistics unions adopted a number of motions reiterating their support for public, universal postal services.  The whole of UNI Europa has rejected this type of fire sale of vital public assets as the Troika forces governments to sell off key components of their national patrimony in the name of austerity measures.

We support the unions in their ongoing actions in protesting the sale of CTT, in particular the coordinated strikes planned for 27, 30 and 31 December.

We also applaud the workers who have rejected the sale by refusing to buy the shares offered to them. The ministry of finance had reserved 5% of the floated shares for sale to the CTT workforce; at the time of its IPO, only a small handful of those shares had been claimed by workers.

The trade unions of the UNI Europa Post & Logistics committee stand in solidarity with Sindetelco, SNTCT and all workers who reject the privatisation of the CTT Group and we are prepared to support their struggle in any way possible.
