New study on social dialogue in ICT sector

UNI Europa ICTS and PIN SME (the association of SME employers in the ICT sector) have been working on a EU funded project to promote social dialogue and to build partnerships between employers' and employees' organisations in the ICT sector. Part of the projet outcomes is a study, carried out by the Fondazione Politecnico di Milano, that provides a thourough mapping of the relevant stakeholders in the sector at local, national and European level.

Gaming unions react in anger to Codere talks

Gaming unions around the world reacted in anger after it emerged that Spanish gaming company, Codere, was in negotiations over an injection of nearly half a million Euros, that would see hedge funds own about 80 percent of the company.

 

UNI Global Union and Codere signed a global agreement one year ago.  UNI, the global union that represents more than 20 million workers from over 900 trade unions in the service sector, believes that it is unacceptable that a company is being controlled and suffocated by shady financial deals.

Grow union power in broadcasting in Brazil

FITERT and UNI Americas agree cooperation to grow union power in the major television companies across Brazil. During a two days intensive organising workshop leaders from the federation of broadcasting unions in Brazil, FITERT met with UNI Americas’ Director for Organising Benjamin Parton and the sector’s regional President Horacio Arrecceygor (SATSAID-Argentina)  to discuss the prospects of growing union power in the major broadcasting companies in Brazil. A strategic plan to build union density was elaborated.

Women's Network Meeting in Japan

On the 25th of February 2014, the Japanese women's network met in Tokio with the attendance of the head of UNI Asia Pacific (Apro) Women, Sister Yoko Ogawa and the Head of the Equal Opportunities Department, Veronica Fernandez Mendez.

The network discussed amongst other things the motions that will be presented at the upcoming World Women's Conference in Cape Town, which will take place in December 2014, and the topics discussed at the last meeting of the UNI Apro Women's Committee.

UNI Europa Finance's engagement in the Banking Union set-up

The structure of the Banking Union is falling into place. It aims to build up common decision-making, take collective responsibility on banks, and curtail the increasing risk of fragmentation of EU banking markets. Given the weight of the financial system in the major European countries, an efficient supervision is of utmost importance and the set up of the single supervisory mechanism (SSM) is therefore an important part. The European Central Bank (ECB) will act as the centerpiece and base its work on close cooperation with the national supervisory authorities.

UNI Gaming Global Union Supports Conrad Casino Workers

UNI Gaming Global Union has received information from AFUC, its affiliates in Uruguay, about a difficult situation in the gaming sector.

Conrad Casino, where the union organises workers, announced about their decision to close services of slots, casino cashiers and security sector. This would affect more than 100 part-time workers.

IMF: A new ally in the fight to end inequality?

The IMF could prove to be an unlikely ally in the fight against global economic inequality.

A recent IMF study concluded what unions have been saying for years – that inequality is damaging to economic growth. The report also dismissed outdated ideas that redistributing wealth could make matters worse.

The report Redistribution, Inequality and Growth follows other recent works by the ILO and the World Economic Forum that found inequality to be the number one threat facing the global economy.

Belgian ALDI-workers victory against work on Sundays!

On February 4th, the management of ALDI Belgium launched a plan that was threatening seriously their employees’ right not to work on Sundays. The discount supermarket chain wanted to open its branches, located at the Belgian coast (from De Panne to Knokke ) on Sundays and on public holidays, during the tourist season and school holidays.

In order to convince the workers to accept the plan, Aldi claimed workers would be offered the choice whether to work on these days or not. Aldi also said employees would be paid extra for working on Sundays.
