LIC – Absorbs 1200 Part-Time Employees to Regular Cadre

State Owned Life Insurance Corporation [LIC] in India has regularized 1200 employees who have been working as part-time sweepers in the corporation.

“These support staff working for LIC were struggling to sustain their families with low wages earned as part-time sweepers,” said V Narasimhan, General Secretary of AINLIEF. The only condition the corporation applied to regularize part-time sweepers was that they must sweep at least 10,000 sq. ft.

Full house for Unite recognition deals at Polestar

Britain’s largest union, Unite, has secured a recognition deal for up to 400 workers at the Polestar printing company in Bicester. The deal at the Bicester site, which prints magazines, brochures and catalogues, means that Unite, one of UNI Global Union's affiliates, is now recognised as the union that negotiates pay and conditions for workers at all of Polestar’s seven UK operations. The Bicester deal comes after a 12 month campaign including assistance from the conciliation service, Acas.

Stop union-busting at Total Call – join our LabourStart campaign

On February 13, 2014, the Total Call call centre in Casablanca, owned by the French telecom group Iliad, dismissed five leaders of the Union Marocaine du Travail (UMT) just one day after they officially registered a local union in the company in accordance with Moroccan law. Among those dismissed were Mostafa Berrchid, El Mehdi Nasseur, and Kamal Souker.

UNI Global Union has launched a LabourStart campaign together with UMT to demand that the fired union leaders are reinstated and that the fundamental right to freedom of association is respected at Total Call in Morocco.

SCA begins Anti Union campaign in Colombia

Andy Snoddy Head of UNI Global Graphical & Packaging, condemned the efforts by the company to stop the workforce in Grupa Familia in Colombia from exercising the right to freedom of association. He said "I am shocked that a respected Swedish company like SCA would resort to such tactics in Colombia. Workers are being intimated by middle managers, one worker has been fired, others threatened with redundancies and pressurised into resigning their membership. I am disappointed, I would have expected better from SCA with its strong commitment to social dialogue".

European trade unions endorse five-point plan for Ukraine

Trade unions from across Europe, meeting today in Brussels, have issued a call for a peaceful, efficient and socially-acceptable way out the crisis in Ukraine, pointing to the years of irresponsible policy-making, unaccountable economic management and systematic disregard of rights and freedoms.  The statement was issued from a meeting of the Pan-European Regional Council European which brings together ITUC affiliates from across Europe, including the Ukrainian trade union movement, as well as the members of the European Trade Union Confederation.

French UNICARE affiliates take action for a social safety net for all

On March 18, these are the angry messages which will be heard in the streets as French UNICARE affiliates take strike action and protest alongside social welfare organizations, retirees, and members of the public, to defend the French social protection system. Protesters and strikers will strongly oppose austerity measures which are currently threatening jobs in the social protection sector, and the well-being of the French public.
