UNI MEI and its affiliates stand in solidarity with UK cinema workers on strike 1st May at the Ritzy Cinema in London, UK

Members of the UK media &entertainment union, BECTU are currently in dispute with their employer Picturehouses/Cineworld over payment of the London Living Wage at the Ritzy cinema, in Brixton, South London. This currently stands at £8.80 an hour. The London Living Wage s widely observed by employers both in the public and private sectors. Staff at the Ritzy currently earn £7.24 an hour.

Walmart Brazil forced to rehire fired worker injured at work

Walmart in Brazil was forced to rehire a worker who was injured at work and then fired by the company. Geane Gonçalves da Silva, from one of Walmart’s Bom Preço stores in the city of João Pessoa, hurt her back when she fell over while pulling a wooden pallet ladened with goods in April 2013. When Ms Silva presented a medical certificate to the company excusing her from work following the accident, Walmart Brazil fired the employee accusing her of faking her medical certificate.

On the occasion of International Labour Day, The Platform for International Cooperation on Undocumented Migrants (PICUM) has called attention to persisting labour exploitation of undocumented migrant workers and has urged governments to implement tools ensuring labour rights protection for all migrant workers, regardless of residence status.

Central Government Administrations EU Social Partners support the hairdressing agreement implementation

In the end of March 2014, the Social Dialogue Committee for Central Government Administrations (SDC CGA) held a discussion regarding the delayed decision of the European Commission to present the social partners’ Agreement on health and safety in the hairdressing sector to the Council for its decision.

The Committee heard the reasoning of the EU Commission who explained that the Agreement was still subject to a cost and benefit analysis before it can be submitted to Council for transposition into EU legislation.

Citibank must save jobs in Korea and stop illegal outflow of money

In response to the recent announcement of the bank to close many branches in Korea, Philip Jennings, the Secretary General of UNI Global Union is sending a solidarity message to the Korean workers and asking the UNI Finance affiliates to join the solidarity campaign of the Korean Finance Industry Union (KFIU) and Citibank Union Korea.
