G7 vows to improve working conditions in global supply chains

The G7 group has agreed to strive for better conditions in global supply chains after pressure from the global labour movement.

“Unsafe and poor working conditions lead to significant social and economic losses and are linked to environmental damage,” the G7 group said in its leader’s declaration following this week’s summit in Berlin.

“Given our prominent share in the globalisation process, G7 countries have an important role to play in promoting labour rights, decent working conditions and environmental protection in global supply chains.”

First strike at IKEA Italy against unilateral dismissal of CLA

Saturday, 6 June, the first strike of IKEA workers, organized by the trade unions Federations Filcams Cgil, Cisl and Fisascat UILTuCS Uil, following the unilateral dismissal of the collective bargaining agreement by the company saw an extraordinary turn out which reached in some cities in Italy 95 per cent.

The 16-hour strike announced last May 29, the first eight to be organised by the individual stores, were, however, coordinated to take place at the same time. This was, beyond any doubts, a strong signal of unity among workers that cannot be underestimated by the company.

Walmart shareholders meeting in the United States

After two weeks of protests in many parts of the United States, OUR Walmart group leaders gathered in Arkansas where the company’s annual shareholders’ meeting was held. Workers in the United States and other countries continue to struggle for fair and living wages and the opportunity to work full time.

UNI Europa calling on MEPs to remove ISDS out of TTIP

UNI Europa, the European service workers union, calls on Members of the European Parliament (MEPs) to remove investor-state dispute settlement (ISDS) from the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP). In this open letter to the European Parliament, paradoxes and critical areas are highlighted. MEPs wanting to safeguard democracy and provide the best possible regulatory framework for Europe’s businesses, citizens and workers, are asked to take action and remove ISDS at the 10 June Plenary.

Korean union KHMU urges government action on MERS

Yoo Ji-Hyun, President of Korean union the KHMU, has held a press conference in Seoul to urge the government to form a pan-government taskforce under the direction of the Presidential Office. Yoo Ji-Hyan also requested the government to designate the viral disease as a national disaster; to take actions corresponding to its urgency and seriousness with tertiary infection being considered beyond secondarily infection; and to raise the level of national epidemic crisis to ‘warning’ from ‘caution’.

Better Regulation Watchdog Network sends open letter to European Parliament on Commission's Better Regulation agenda

On 3 June, the Better Regulation Watchdog Network uniting 57 trade unions and civil society organisations has sent an open letter to Members of the European Parliament in response to the Commission proposal for an Inter-Institutional Agreement and the Commission communication on Better Regulation for Better Results.

The Better Regulation Watchdog Network strongly supports genuine Better Regulation while believing that the focus of EU decision-making should be on improving regulation. Better Regulation should be Better for All.
