UNI condemns murder of Manhattan security guard

UNI Global Union expressed shock and horror after a private security guard was murdered at his place of work last week. On Friday afternoon in New York at the 201 Varick Street federal building, a New Jersey man fatally opened fire on private security guard Idrissa Camara. Camara worked as a private protective officer for FJC security Services and was a member of UNI affiliate SEIU. He had volunteered to stay late, even though he was supposed leave work at 4 pm, over an hour before the shooting.

A strong union for Turkish security guards

UNI Property Services affiliate in Turkey, Güvenlik-is, has just passed the 25,000 member mark. In only December last year, when the membership stood at 10,000, the General Secretary Bolat Ankarali predicted that his team of hard working organisers and their nation-wide network of shop stewards and activists would achieve 25,000 members by the end of 2015. We did not imagine that it would happen so soon.

Founding conference for 4,000 private hospital workers in Kathmandu

Private hospital workers in Nepal have overcome extremely challenging conditions to hold the founding conference for their new National Health Care Federation: the Union of Private Hospital and Health Care Workers – Nepal (UNIPHIN) in Kathmandu on August 7. The federation brings together 14 unions representing 4,000 workers, and is growing by the day.

Walmart union Sindicato Interempresa Lider (SIL) in Chile reaches an historic agreement

After many weeks of negotiations with Walmart, the SIL in Chile signed yesterday in Ciudad Empresarial, a unique collective agreement in the history of the company.

This agreement unified more than 15 thousand SIL members of different Walmart Chile brands (Hiper, Express, Acuenta, Ekono, Central Mayorista) in a single negotiation. Brands like Ekono , Acuenta and Central Mayorista, with lower standards than other Walmart brands, improved the benefits offered to workers.

First collective agreement at Robinson & Co. (Malaysia)

With strong support by the UNI Malaysia Liaison Council the first collective agreement between the BHD Employees Union and Robinson & Co. management has been negotiated.

The agreement was signed on the 4th of August and will be in effect for 3 years from 1 August 2015 to the 30 July 2018.

Head of UNI Commerce Alke Boessiger said, “We are delighted to announce the first collective agreement at Robinson & Co. This is yet another breakthrough for UNI-MLC and UNICOME in organizing the commerce sector in Malaysia.”
