Prosegur workers and trade union leaders are coming together in Santiago for two days of talks over Prosegur’s failure to condemn attacks on staff. The meeting follows the company’s unwillingness to agree to take part in meaningful discussions with the unions and workers on these issues.
Over the last year, three trade union leaders - Prosegur workers in Chile, Peru and Colombia, have been violently attacked. Prosegur has not publicly condemned any of these attacks or filed complaints with the police.
Earlier this year in Chile, a security guard and shop steward was hit with a metal bar at work. Despite the fact that the incident took place during work hours, Prosegur has not filed a complaint on the attack. The worker and his union publicly critised Prosegur for not filing a complaint with Chilean police.
In Colombia in November 2014, a Prosegur worker and union leader was punched in the mouth by a Prosegur security manager. The attacker was sanctioned for three days, was not fired by Prosegur, and is still working in the same position. Prosegur managers in Colombia have falsely accused trade union leaders of “terrorism”.
In Peru in August 2014, another trade union leader working for Prosegur was brutally attacked outside his house. No personal belongings were stolen during the attack. Prosegur allowed the distribution of anonymous leaflets in the company’s premises with false accusations against the union leader and pictures of his house.
Spanish bank BBVA and abuses by Prosegur
The Spanish bank BBVA, one of Prosegur’s biggest clients, has remained silent regarding the continued human rights abuses suffered by Prosegur employees working for the bank.
The meeting of Prosegur trade union leaders and workers is taking place 10 -11 August in Santiago.
