First two collective agreements in Israel's hi-tech industry

Histadrut Chairman Avi Nissenkorn, Director of Comverse's Israeli site Shmulik Haham, Chairman of the Internet, Cellular and Hi-Tech Workers Union in the Histadrut Yaki Haluzi, Chairman of the Comverse Employees' Committee Amir Briga, and representatives of Tech Mahindra in Israel signed on June 24 the first two collective agreements in the hi-tech industry, at the Histadrut headquarters in Tel Aviv. The agreements regulate the working conditions of Comverse employees in relation to the deal that was signed with the Indian company Tech Mahindra.

GMB addresses EU Heads of State: Don’t negotiate away social and employment rights

On 23 June, UNI Europa affiliate GMB addressed a letter to 27 EU Heads of State and governments, i.e. excluding the UK, as well as EU ambassadors of each of these Member States, in advance of the ongoing EU summit. British Prime Minister David Cameron is aiming to push for an EU reform agenda that scales back the application of employment rights in the UK which is unacceptable. GMB asks for UNI affiliates’ support and encourages action urging governments to resist UK government attacks on Social Europe.

More bad news for Huhtamaki

The problems at Huhtamaki worsened when the Finnish manufacturer of packaging for retail items was slapped with a 15.5 million-euro fine by the European Commission for its role in a pricing cartel operating in France and northwestern Europe.

Global Network formed to fight anti-union behaviour in Huhtamaki

Unions from Huhtamäki plants around the world met in Helsinki on 1 June to establish a global trade union network. There are currently a number of disputes between the employer and workers at Huhtamäki's packinging operations, in countries including India, Turkey, and the United States.Participants at the global network meeting spoke about bad relations between management and trade unions. Very often union representatives have no right even to enter the factory, and in many countries health and safety rights are violated frequently.

2015 UNI Europa Youth Conference

The UNI Europa Youth Committee held its Conference in Dublin, Ireland on 22-24 June 2015.

The 2015 UNI Europa Youth Conference succesfully endorsed its Action Plan for 2015 -2017, adopted three Resolutions, issued a Solidarity statement to young Greek workers and elected the Steering Group that will carry the work until 2017.

DS Smith acquires 7 packaging plants from Lantero in Spain

The British company announced today that it has reached an agreement to buy the corrugated packaging activities from the Spanish Group Lantero for 190 million Euros. 

The agreement includes 7 sites in Spain with 700 employees in total and will allow DS Smith to take 10% of the market share in Spain.

The company is active in 32 countries with more than 24'000 employees with a total income of 5'600 million British Pounds.

FIJI Essential National Industries Decree, Restricts Freedom

The Fiji Bank and Finance Sector Employees Union (FBFSEU) welcome the discussion by the government to repeal the Essential National Industries Decree.

Sailesh Naidu, National Secretary of FBFSEU, made a submission to the FIJI's Parliamentary Standing Committee on Justice, Law and Human Rights, expressed hope,  with the support of the committee, the Bill will be further amended to meet their recommendations.

Workers' rights boost as Norwegian government demands new investment rules

Workers’ rights received a timely boost as the Norwegian parliament announced it will draft new investment rules for the country’s giant pension fund.

The government will draft an expectation document for Norges Bank Investment Management (NBIM) which manages the €791bn Norwegian Government Pension Fund. The move follows a number of complaints against NBIM under the OECD Guidelines for Multinational Enterprises for investing in companies allegedly responsible for workers’ rights abuses.
