Bank employees and officers from 27 public sector banks, including the State Bank of India, 12 private sector and eight foreign banks participated in a day-long strike in India on 18 December 2013.

The strike was called by the United Forum of Bank Unions (UFBU), the umbrella organisation of five employees unions and four officers unions of state-run banks in India.

The unions are demanding immediate wage revision and are also protesting against the ongoing banking sector reforms. The last wage settlement in the banking sector had expired in October 2012 but discussions for a revised wage settlement have been inconclusive for a year.

Nine unions, AIBEA, All India Bank Officers Confederation (AIBOC), National Confederation Of Bank Employees (NCBE), All India Bank Officers Association (AIBOA), Bank Employees Federation Of India (BEFI), Indian National Bank Employees Federation (INBEF), Indian National Bank Officers Congress (INBOC), National Organisation Of Bank Workers (NOBW) and National Organisation of Bank Officers (NOBO) had been given the strike call under the UBFU umbrella.
