At the 4th UNI Africa Regional Conference, UNI Global Union issued a declaration against slavery and vowed to put the nail in the coffin of slavery. Over 40 million people are in bonded slave labour and there are 168 million victims of child labour. UNI Global Union and UNI Africa are committed to the fight against modern slavery, forced labour, human trafficking and child labour, with the aim of achieving Target 8.7 of the United Nation’s 2030 Sustainable Development (SDGs).
Houcine Abassi, former secretary general of the Union Generale des Travailleurs Tunisiens (UGTT), brought a message of hope and solidarity to the UNI Africa Conference in Dakar. Houcine Abassi’s tireless work as part of the National Dialogue Quartet helped save Tunisia from civil war. Abassi was met with a rapturous African welcome and a standing ovation.
UNI Global Union’s General Secretary Philip Jennings was introduced as the “Global Warrior” to the more than 500 participants at the opening.
General Secretary of CNTS, and President of ITUC-Africa, Mody Guiro said, “In Africa it is the multinationals who are smashing social protection and exploiting our resources. We must innovate with concrete proposals on everyday problems – we must anticipate and not react afterwards. We must start right now by strengthening education, developing the unity of our unions and by being a credible alternative.”
